Can I set up ReadyNAS Duo without RAID?

That did it! Both NAS units are up and running the way I want them and I have an automatic backup scheduled on the 4 Ultra to the Duo; it's running now. And along the way I figured out how to get both units to get power notifications from the single UPS that they share; and I finally got the Duo to be able to send e-mail alerts! In two years now I've never before been able to get that working.
I'm a happy camper now! Everything is working the way I want it to, at long last.
