Can I use 1 port for direct connection and 2nd to the switch
I jusy ordered 716X. Can't afford going to a full 10gb network yet, so for now I'm thinking about ordering just one 10gb card for my main workstation, and use 1gb for the rest of the computers. Would that work?
Direct link 10gb port to the main PC, and 1gb link to a switch with the rest of the PCs connected to it, including the main one (I hope you understand what I mean). Basically my PC will be connected to NAS twice - via 10gb direct link and via 1gb to the switch.
Will I be able to set this up?
Thanks

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could certainly try that but you may have to specify the I.P. of the NAS when connecting to it to force the use of the 10Gbit connection.
Connecting the NAS and the PC to a switch that does 10GBase-T and connecting that switch to a gigabit switch would be a better option. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Yes, although of course those switches are quite expensive.mdgm wrote: ...Connecting the NAS and the PC to a switch that does 10GBase-T and connecting that switch to a gigabit switch would be a better option. - ysnkAspirant

So NAS will have 2 IP addresses, one for 1gb and one for 10gb connections - correct?StephenB wrote: Yes, although of course those switches are quite expensive.
Exactly, the switch is out of my budget right now. Plus, I don't really need 10gb to all of my computers, just one - my main workstation. I'm running a Cisco SG300-10 switch, happy with it so far. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes. A separate I.P. for each NIC
