Can my NAS tell me my IP addess!?
Hi, i often connect to my NAS remotely, so i can see the frontpage and view transmission. This was working fine whilst i was in a house with O2 internet. Would just go into a browser and type http://myip:8181 and would be able to connect to transmission.
However now i'm in a new place with BT internet and they keep changing my IP address. Obviously once this has changed i have no way of connecting to the NAS whilst away from home. Is there anyway i can access my NAS another way so i can be updated with the new IP address?
Many Thanks

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserLook into ddns (dynamic dns).

- DynDNS.com or no-ip.com are two of the most popular ones I've used with success.
- JarnoGGuideThere is a community add-on you can use in combination with a service like dyndns.org, but most routers I know have a build-in option to use those services as well.
- mpj881AspirantOnce i've set up an account (e.g.username.dnsd.info) do i need to insert this somewhere in my BT router?
To make matters more complicated, i have a netgear router attached to the BT router on a seperate subnetwork, which i am the only user in the house to use! (Has my NAS, my desktop and wireless laptops attached to it). I presume the dynamic dns setup stuff will have to be on the BT router though?
Never used dyn dns before so sorry if im sounding a bit stupid! - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAssuming the BT router includes DDNS support, you should configure it there. Alternatively you could install a software client on a PC connected to the BT network. That will periodically probe the external IP and update the DDNS server.
If you try to put it on your Netgear router or subnet you will likely end up with the Netgear router's external IP instead of your real external IP. (The desktop client might figure out the true external IP, but I doubt that the router will). - mpj881AspirantWhat i dont understand is how the dyn dns will be updated when im away from home? If my IP changes when i'm away from home the address i have wont work as its pointing to the old IP address. so i still have the same issue?
edit: think i understand now, if i fill out the router option window for dyn dns the router should update the host to the correct IP address? Instead of needing a computer do this? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Yes. You are correct in thinking that the computer approach requires a machine running at home while you are away.mpj88 wrote: edit: think i understand now, if i fill out the router option window for dyn dns the router should update the host to the correct IP address?
