Before you begin, I suggest upgrading to RAIDar 4.3.8 ( http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ReadyNAS/RAIDar_Win_4_3_8.exe ). I don't recommend using RAIDar 6.x (there are some issues with older NAS like your duo v1).
I am not sure what you mean by a "hub". If you are connecting it directly to your gateway / router then you shouldn't see a 192.168.168.168 address. If that is what you are doing, then try rebooting the gateway/router, and then remove/reattach the ethernet cable from the NAS. Then let us know if RAIDar can find it.
If you are not connecting it directly to the gateway/router, then please let us know exactly what you are connecting it to (vendor and model) - and also how the 'hub" is connected to the rest of your network.
If you connect the laptop directly to the NAS, then you should see an address of 192.168.168.168 on the NAS.
You'll need to set the laptop IP address temporarily to 192.168.168.167, the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway to 192.168.168.1. There is a guide here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/ Note your current setup, as you will want to go back to it later.
Then run cmd from the laptop (windows search bar). That will launch a black command box window. Select it, and type
ping 192.168.168.168
and see if it responds.

Hi Stephen
no joy
I think my only option is to retrieve the files from disc2 is this possible?
thanks for your time.

Hi 61gazza,
If you can confirm that disk 2 is healthy and the unit is on RAID1, we can try booting up the unit with just disk 2. Though I'm not sure why the unit did show up in your hub or router's attached devices and not on the RAIDar utility. Is this the same case on another PC (if you have any)?
Kind regards,
BrianL

Hi Stephen
sorry I meant router not hub, but when I connect laptop to router I cannot see NAS info on RAIDar screen on laptop,
if I connect laptop to NAS then the RAIDar appears and the NAS info appears eventually but I cannot do anything with it, if I press setup it says you are not on the same subnet.
what do you think I should do as the disc2 is showing green and healthy? It is strange that in two days the new disc 1 has died?
i am not convinced this NAS box is going to work?
i will give it another shot if you like?
thanks

I downloaded RAIDar 6 on my MacBook but it searches for NAS but never finds it? Connected direct to NAS that is.
- mdgm-ntgrFeb 17, 2016NETGEAR Employee Retired
If you direct connect the NAS to the laptop you need to set the I.P. address for your PC's ethernet adapter to e.g. 192.168.168.100 temporarily.

Hi
thanks for reply
i did two set ups tonight,
from last night disc 1 was showing dead on RAIDar, so I removed disc 1.
1. Connected laptop to router, connected NAS to router, went on Mac and looked at IP settings for NAS.
put IP address in browser, and nothing happened, RAIDar not showing full screen, set up , browse buttons ghosted out.
2. So connected laptop to NAS, change IP address in laptop, did a five second reset of NAS and RAIDar showed all buttons setup etc ok, but it shows disc1 as dead even though there is no disc in?
when I click on set up it goes to browser and displays http://192.168.168.168/admin, but then try's to connect and says problem loading page, connection has timed out.
not sure what to do now?
- 61gazzaFeb 18, 2016Aspirant
When I click on browse an error box shows Windows cannot access \\192.168.168.168
check the spelling of the name otherwise there might be a problem with your network, to try and identify and resolve network problems click diagnose.
clicked diagnose and Windows network diagnostics says Windows has found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically, contact your internet service provider or network administrator for help or click here for information that you can try.
would it be possible to buy another NAS box the same as this one and just simply put both discs straight in new box?

Hi again
I have seen a Netgear Ready Nas 2150 second hand, is it possible to put my two discs in that and start again, is it feasable and easy to set up?
thanks
- mdgm-ntgrFeb 18, 2016NETGEAR Employee Retired
This may/may not work and if you run into problems support will be unable to assist if you are using a second hand unit.

If you hook the NAS back up to the router, and remove both disks (labeling them by slot).... Does RAIDar see the NAS and report "no disks"?
You can also test the disks with vendor tools (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital). To do this you'd need a USB->SATA adapter of some kind (unless your laptop has eSATA).
You could also contact support (support.netgear.com) and pay for per-incident support.

With the laptop direct to NAS box after removing both discs the RAIDar state no discs detected,
if I buy a sata to sub converter will I be able to drag all files over to laptop?
i am thinking of buying a second hand NAS box the same model as this and just sticking the disks in, will this work with another box?
thanks for your help
- 61gazzaFeb 19, 2016Aspirant
if I buy a sata to usb converter, can i get a 1tb disc even though I have 2 x 500GB at the moment, could I have 500GB as disc1 and 1TB as disc 2, its just that I have looked at prices and there much the same price?

I agree with mdgm here - from your posts so far, it seems unlikely that you have a hardware problem with the chassis. If that's case, then migrating your disks to another duo chassis won't change anything.
I think a better path is to engage Netgear somehow (either paid support, or perhaps a volunteer here will offer to take a look).
61gazza wrote:

You can install linux reader on a windows laptop ( http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ ), and it should be able to read the files on disk 1 (the "data" disk in the array). You can then drag/drop them to the laptop.
Once you have the data, you could do a full factory reset and build everything from the beginning (reconfigure the NAS, recreate the shares, restore the data from the backup).
You will want a converter that also has a power brick for the power connection to the disk (most include that). I've used Sabrent adapters successfully.
61gazza wrote:

You can, but you will still only have 500 GB of space. I recommend a WD10EFRX (or a WD20EFRX if you want to go for 2 TB).
If you then replace the second disk later on, you will get the full space (1 TB volume with the WD10EFRX)

Hi
thanks for your reply, much appreciated,
I have just bought a sata to usb converter coming tomorrow, I will link up one drive to laptop, I have Windows and Mac laptops, which one would be better, I think I will try the seatools software to check disc and hopefully copy over data to another drive?
then do a factory reset, do I do it with no drives in?
thanks
- StephenBFeb 19, 2016Guru - Experienced User
You need to use the windows laptop with linux reader (there is no mac version). Also, Seatools is windows-only.
You have to do the factory reset with the disks installed. What it actually does is wipe the disks and do a clean install to the disks from the flash image in the NAS.
- 61gazzaFeb 19, 2016Aspirant
Thanks for your help, hopefully I will be able to copy all data over tomorrow using Seatools, then I will do as you say, factory reset.
then buy another make of NAS box as another backup, what do you recommend?
thanks

Copy the data over with linux reader. Seatools can test the drive, but can't read the file system.

The RN102 is the modern equivalent to your duo - it costs about $100-$125 street price at the moment (diskless).
If you are interested in video streaming, then you should consider the RN212. That's a lot more expensive ($330 street price today), but it offers real-time transcoding with plex (which is a good thing for streaming).
But for straight backup, the RN102 is fast enough, and it is quite a bit faster than the duo. You can also run backup jobs between them (automatically back up the RN102 to the duo, or vice-versa).

Thanks for your advice Stephen
I will let you know how I get on.
- 61gazzaFeb 21, 2016Aspirant
Hi Stephen
just to let you know the disc 1 which was showing dead is apparently ok according to Seatools, and just copying files over as I write using Linux as you kindly suggested.
so as soon as I finish I will put two discs in and do a factory reset and hope NAS box sorts itself out, it's strange that it was saying dead when it wasn't.
thanks

Hi Stephen
i have removed over all files to my laptop, although the videos are not opening as they need the file format to open them, any ideas how to do that, sorry for all these questions.
how do I do the factory reset, put discs in, do I link up the NAS to laptop or not bother?
just NAS on its own and turn on, press reset for 25 seconds, and it will be done or do I do it through RAIDar?
thanks

What is the file format? MP4, AVI, MKV???
VLC will play almost all video files, and you can simply drag/drop to it if you want to test a couple.
61gazza wrote:
how do I do the factory reset
The disks need to be in the NAS. The full procedure is in the hardware manual (page 15 and following) http://www.readynas.com/download/documentation/HM/Duov1_NV%2Bv1_HW_en_06Dec11.pdf
After you set up the NAS, upgrade the firmware to 4.1.14 before restoring the data.

Hi Stephen
thanks for your help again,
tried ad to download VLC, but using Mozilla it downloads but doesn't open so not sure what I can do, maybe uninstall and try google chrome?
also you say to update firmware but when I try and do that it comes up with Java needs updating but then when I do that it comes up with an error code 1603.
when I try and rectify error code It doesn't work, apparently they know about the error and are working on it so I'll have to use RAIDar 4.3 which is the disc that came with this box in 2009.
the factory restore is nearly complete, but off to bed now will try and set it up tomorrow.
thanks and goodnight!

I think you are confusing firmware with RAIDar. You can't update the NAS firmware until the factory reset is complete. You update the firmware in frontview as shown below:

It should install fine from Mozilla. There are spam download links out there - the one you want is http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

Hi Stephen
well it did the factory reset, turned off the NAS then turned it back on and nothing happened but blue light flashing, did a 5 second reset and green lights came on eventually and blue light is fixed.
however not sure what is best to do, shall I link laptop to NAS and change IP address or what?
i did get the front view open but it wouldn't update, said couldn't connect to server, I'm nor sure this NAS box is any good, what procedure should I be doing now, I'm close to chucking it out and buy a decent brand.
thanks
