Can't connect to NV+ after 4.1.14 upgrade
My NV+ has been bulletproof for 3 or 4 years. Today I upgraded from 4.1.13 to 4.1.14 through the "remote update" tab in FrontView. It said that it encountered an error. When I got home (I was doing this from work), I noticed I could not longer connect to frontview. I rebooted and:
I've rebooted a couple of times now, including leaving it powered off and unplugged for a few minutes. Same thing. Despite the update saying it failed in frontview, after I rebooted I got a "upgrade successful" email.
I also got a disk usage warning, which is weird because the front panel still says I have 3.1TB free.
I have backups - though not complete ones - so I'd rather not wipe it if possible.
Any help would be massively appreciated.
Cheers,
Ben
- I can't connect to frontview
- I can't ssh
- RAIDar can't find it
- I can't see any shares through windows or DLNA
- I can ping it
- I do receive emails from it

- benrhughesAspirantSome further info:
By connecting the ethernet cable from nas to PC ( and setting a static IP address on the PC), RAIDar can find the NV+. I seems to get correct info, can flash the LEDs with the Locate button etc. However, when the Setup button attempts to open FrontView (192.168.168.168/admin), it fails. I also noticed that the Format button in RAIDar is disabled, and that the version detected by RAIDar is 4.1.13.
Again, any help very much appreciated.
Ben - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredConnect it back up to your network and check your PM inbox.
- darkuncleAspirantI'm also unable to connect to mine, but that's because it's been in "Booting ..." according to the LCD display for about 5 hours now. (this was after an automatic download of the 4.1.14 firmware, followed by a "shutdown and reboot" from Frontview.) No other errors or alerts via email at any time in this calendar year (replaced a bad drive in 2013, but otherwise this system just runs). I'm nervous about yanking power during a boot, but I'm not sure what else I can do - holding down the power button on the front (either short-term to get a graceful shutdown, or 10+ seconds to get immediate power-off) has no effect at all.
- darkuncleAspirantyanked power, re-applied, restarted ... everything came up within a few minutes. No errors reported in the logs, health is green everywhere, everything looks fine as far as I can tell. I'm generally skeptical of flukes, but they do occasionally happen; I guess this was one of them.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSo has it come up with 4.1.14 or 4.1.13?
- benrhughesAspirantThanks heaps for fixing my issue mdgm.
One thing that seems broken since the 4.1.14 update is ssh tunneling. I occasionally ssh tunnel to the NAS from work which lets me get to various web servers I have at home (including Frontview and Transmission on the NV+). Since upgrading, ssh works fine, but tunneling doesn't.
If I attempt to connect to the proxy that putty's running, the ssh terminal session becomes unresponsive and pages never load. I've tried with both putty (with my previous working config) and cygwin (with ssh -C -D <port> <nas ip>).
I've confirmed this is an issue with the NV+ by tunneling, with the same settings, to my VPS (which works fine).
Cheers,
Ben - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you send me your logs (see the link in my signature)?
- benrhughesAspirantI can get the full log download once I'm at home (can't get to frontview atm :-)). In the mean time, is there something from /var/log you want a look at?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCould be related to the problem you had before the upgrade.
Can you download your config backup zip file (System > Config Backup) and email that to me? - benrhughesAspirantDone. Thanks again.
