Can't connect to SSH/Frontview on NV+ after upgrade FW 4.1.8

What exactly did you install via apt-get? Did you just try to install Java? Did you install libc6 (this will break Frontview)?
When you say you did an apt-get update did you also do an apt-get upgrade? An apt-get upgrade can cause all kinds of problems
It's possible an OS Re-install (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu) may help, but then again in this case it may only make things worse. It will leave data intact though.
