Can't reach Ultra 4 even after Enable Root SSH Access

You have to login with root, not admin.

If you are not familiar with Linux, I don't recommend messing with that stuff.

Totally agree you could seriously mess things up
you would be better off taking the drives out connecting them to your pc and

Right now, there is only one drive in the Ultra 4, since the other one crashed (later I will use 4 from the WD red series, which I suppose don't have those problems). Probably due to the high cycle count thing. The one left have around 77000 cycle counts in about 10.000 hours alive. So if I would mess up, wouldn't it only be the one drive? And can this be fixed by formatting it? If I would take out this drive and put in 4 other drives, they wouldn't be affected, right?

Mine is a WD20EARX, so I suppose I shouldn't use it. But then, what should I do?!

Basically, if you use widdle3 you certainly void WD's warranty if they catch you; if you don't you might shorten the life of the drive. I chose not to run widdle3, under the theory that if it outlasted WD's warranty I was getting all the life I should expect anyway. (I purchased back when the green drive warranty was 3 years).

These drives have been running about 2 1/2 years now with load cycle counts in the 230000-250000 range (well above yours), and they are still working fine. So I am thinking I made the right call. When they do fail I will replace them with Red models.

It's not clear to me that your drive failed due to the load cycle count, the drive should go much higher than 77000. How old is the drive?

You are right, it might of course not be due to the load cycle count, it was just a guess based on what I've read from other threads. The drive is just 14 months.

Maybe I should just do as you did and let it be. If yours could make it that far, then surely my could as well. It's just that when reading the other threads, it seemed like the high load cycle count was reaaaally bad.

I'm waiting for my new HDD from the red series, so once they have arrived, I'll move everything to the Ultra 4 and keep the WD green in the Ultra 2.

BTW, I purchased WD20EARS. That NAS is currently used for backup; I have the spin down timer set to 30 minutes (of course the load cycle will not increase when the drive is spun down).

Both the EARS and the EARX models are spec'd at 300K load cycles.

Hmm, I'm having SSH access problems & have opened a ticket. I wonder if there's a link somehow....?

My problem : fixed after assistance from the helpdesk - all working perfectly again now !
