FTP is a solution to transfer files, but if the NAS and the computers are on the same local network, and a member of the same workgroup, they should be able to transfer files amongst them and see them under the networktab in windows explorer.
So to answer your question, no readynas Remote isn't necessary to access your files locally. The program is basically used to access files easily from a remote location.
As Stephen said, if you type \\YourNASname or \\YourNASIP in either a windows explorer window (not internet explorer) or on start -> search or in the run command you should be able to access your shares and be able to transfer files (keep in mind that the shares must be activated on CIFS under the shares options in frontview).
