CNID DB error using AFP in Lion
My rig:
late 2011 iMac 27inch 3.1Ghz Quad Core i5 running OS X Lion
ReadyNAS NV+
RAIDiator 4.1.8
4x1tb Hitachi drives
I'm having an issue whenever I try to use AFP on the ReadyNAS NV+. The problem just started happening out of the blue. I upgraded to RAIDiator 4.1.8 several weeks ago and never had a problem. The error i'm now getting is "Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB, using temporary CNID DB instead". Time machine still works perfectly and my back-ups are completing without any errors. I've read about this issue being a problem with netatalk, but I have no idea how to troubleshoot the issue or even how to restart netatalk.
For now I'm connecting with CIFS. I might just stay with CIFS and disable AFP is I can't get this issue resolved.
Thanks in advance for your help. It's greatly appreciated.

- benjaminconnellAspirantFun reading - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388928,00.asp - Headline - Apple OS X Lion, NAS Data Issues Widespread; Could Take Weeks to Fix from July last year.
After a week with L3 tech support not able to do anything for me and reverting from 4.2.20 to 4.2.17 back up to 4.2.19 and having to delete .AppleD* files at least twice a day to get my AFP shares to work (they did not work) ....I did a ton of reading think I may have figured this out. The problem is that apple updated Netatalk authentication. For security reasons apple disabled "DHCAST128", which is an asymmetrical encryption algorithm used for the password authentication, as allowed for the AFP Protocol in Lion. Now the minimum requirement is "DHX2" – the successor of DHCAST128. and they removed Lion needs DHX2 authentication in order to support user logins and support for AFP 3.3
The default configuration is to symlink "uams_dhx2.so" to "uams_dhx2_pam.so" inside "/usr/lib/netatalk". I noticed there is "uams_dhx2_passwd.so" in /usr/lib/netatalk so I edited:
/etc/netatalk/afpd.conf >>- -tcp -noddp -uamlist uams_dhx.so,uams_dhx2_passwd.so
and
/etc/default/netatalk >>AFPD_UAMLIST="-U uams_dhx.so,uams_dhx2_passwd.so"
You could alternatively change the symlink for "uams_dhx2.so" to "uams_dhx2_passwd.so" inside "/usr/lib/netatalk
Reboot after changes and I am good so far. - cjfitzAspirantI just upgraded to RAIDiator 4.2.22. As soon as I rebooted my ReadyNAS Pro-6 I got the CNID DB error message and it went into ready only mode. I can access everything on the NAS, but I can no longer write anything to the NAS. Very frustrating. I saw the post below about changing afpd.conf, but I don't understand the description of how to do it based on the posts here. Can anyone help a less technical person (me) make the needed changes to fix this issue? I would sure appreciate some direction here. Thanks.
- DrDan1AspirantSame - just upgraded to 4.2.22 (from 4.2.19) and immediately got this error. Using OSX 10.8.2...
- Blues11LuminaryI remember getting this issue. By upgrading to RAIDiator 4.2.22 the problem solved itself. I wish I could assist. Have you rebooted your Mac(s) (and smart switches if they exist) after installing 4.2.22?
I'm in an all-Apple environment, running a combination of 10.8 (MBP), 10.7 (MM and MP), and 10.4 (with 2 very old PPC Macs). - hilldesignAspirantI wanted to thank this board for helping me sort out the firmware upgrade of a six year old NV+ so it could talk to a new iMac. I, too, had the CNIB error after the updgrade, but upon rebooting and a night of database processing, things seem to be working. Fingers crossed.
- damon1AspirantIs there fix? I've started to have this problem and I'm not finding a solution.
