Following on from my previous post I have got a bit further.
Looking at some of the other DLNA posts (e.g. http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=52683) it seems that there can be a problem with MKV files. These present a problem for the ReadyNAS scan at which point it seems to give up and not see any further files or directories. Some people have success by renaming or removing the MKVs.
As my 603 cannot see beyond a certain point on the ReadyNAS I took one of the music files from a directory which it couldn't see and put it in an earlier visible dir. Hey Presto, that music is now visible (in the new dir) after I do a rescan. This would suggest my problem is something to do with certain files preventing the rescan to be performed correctly. Unfortunately, I don't know which are the offending files/formats. I suppose I could move all my music bit by bit to the new directory until I find which causes the problem.
This seems to be a problem with the ReadyNAS rather than the Marantz CR603
