Considering RAM upgrade in Duo

I've got a ReadyNAS Duo v1 with the stock 256MB of RAM. I'm considering installing 1GB of RAM, not to increase read/write speeds, but to run add-ons more smoothly. I have transmission, and Twonky Media Server running nicely until I try to run a backup job at the same time. As soon as the backup routine starts, things start to choke up a bit.

Can anyone with a similar need comment about improvements with a RAM upgrade. I don't want to spend the money unless someone else can confirm an improvement in performance.

Thanks.

  • The addons seemed to benefit the most from the upgrade IMHO. Although Frontview did seem a little more responsive too. (I do mean *little* though, it's not a huge, impressive enhancement on Frontview, but just a very minor improvement.)

From what I have understood, Transmission, probably more than others addons, gets the biggest boost from the upgrade.

I used a Crucial soDiMM in mine, but I've seen Corsair and a few lesser brands also been given a good review.

There is no official list any more, and Netgear no longer support/advise on the upgrade like they used to when I was looking to do mine. But there is plenty of posts on here and via Google shedding lots of other useful info.

Always run the memtest twice after fitting it, - that is key. And keep the old original DDR soDiMM just in case you need it to fall back on at a later date.

I would suggest only trying modules recently suggested for the Duo v1 or NV+ v1. Some newer versions of modules retain the same module number but are no longer compatible.
  • Well, it looks like this Corsair Memory VS1GSDS333 1 GB PC2700 333MHz DDR 200-pin SODIMM Laptop Memory has a lot of nods of approval, so I think I'll go ahead and order. But before I do, I'd like to understand the risks. I see posts of people being unable to boot with memory that isn't working. But, if I simply re-install the stock memory, is there any risk of bad things? I'll definitely make a full c volume backup first (probably two), but I don't want to be knocked out of commission long term.
