Copy between USB share and 'normal' share is going over LAN?

Hello,

Previously a USB-HDD was connected to my laptop and I moved some files(±25GB) to the USB-HDD. I took ±15 minutes.

Now I've connected the external USB-HDD via the front USB port to my readynas
I've mapped \\readynas\c and I see all my shares and the USB-HDD. So far so good.

Now I wanted to move the files to the readynas (e.g.: "data" share) and windows said it would take 100 minutes.

I was expecting the same duration as before (±15minutes)

So I was thinking that the files are sent over the LAN instead that the readynas sees that the files are coming from the USB-HDD and it should not be going over the LAN back to where it's coming from, the readynas.
This means that it didn't makes sense to copy it to an external USB-HDD. Moving from my laptop to the readynas over LAN gives the same result (qua duration).

Can anyone confirm this?

BR, Rob

Yes, doing a Windows copy or move between any two shares on the NAS, USB or otherwise, will go form the NAS over the ethernet through the Windows PC and back to the NAS. You see, Windows doesn't know the two volumes are on the same device.

The best way to copy directly from USB to the NAS, you need to set up a backup job. If you only want to do specific files and don't want to have to put them in a separate directory to distinguish them to the backup process, you could use an add-on like Xplorer. Unfortunately, if it's a SPARC based NAS, you won't find the direct copy to be much faster than the Windows copy, assuming you have gigabit ethernet; especially for an NTFS formatted USB drive.

If you only access to the files from the laptop, you are correct that leaving the USB drive connected to the laptop is likely better. It is certainly faster.

    I've a Ultra-2, so it's a non-sparc nas. So I can use Xplorer to copy directly from USB-HDD-share to NAS-shares.

    Thank you.

  • Seems to be that there is no filemanager for the Ultra :(
  • I had the same problem and tried the php browersolution till I installed elfm. It runs on your NAS so the files are not going over the network and your computer and back. Moving a directory with 100 Gbyte on the same disk takes only a second as it's just a rename. Moving between disk depends on the disk speed.

Easy to install : just type "apt-get install emelfm" as root and no quotes ;-)
emelfm is is an X-windows client application : it runs on the NAS but output is send to your computer screen:
"export DISPLAY=192.168.0.99:0" (replace by your computer IP an no quotes).
You need an X-windows server on your computer. I used Xming (open source, free and small).

Another working X-windows filemanager xnc works fine too : "apt-get install xnc"

The Midnight Commander you can see in the previous post : "apt-get install mc" No X-windows required for this one so you can use it from any SSH capable machine.

    Hope this helps.

    Install the free add-on: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=30795

I tried your solution first but was unable to browse the USB disks and the local shares. I think AJAXplorer is for Web administration.
For this case I think Midnight Commander or emelfm is a better solution.
