Have you tried using RAIDar to see the status? http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20684/~/readynas-downloads?cid=wmt_netgear_referral?cid=wmt_netgear_organic
Also many people think they have a v2, but they really have a v1. Please check this guide: http://www.rnasguide.com/2012/01/09/how-to-tell-whether-i-have-a-duo-v1-or-duo-v2-or-nv-v1-or-nv-v2/

Thanks
i have checked the model and it says it is RND2000 v2 on the bottom of the unit.
the RAIDar programme says that the system is corrupt boot.
i have cleared the partisions on both drives using windows disk management. and also the unit fan just runs very fast and is very loud

If you mean the bottom front, then it should say ReadyNAS Duo v2
Did you use the procedure on pages 16-17 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/ReadyNAS_Duov2_NV+v2_HW_en_23-Mar-12.pdf
