Crashplan on Duo/NV+ v2? [SOLVED + TUTORIAL]

UPDATED: See filzip77's post below for a guide\Tutorial on how to install

I’m new to the forums so please be gentle ….

I’m looking to venture into having a dedicated/off the shelf NAS rather then the DIY version I have been running for a while. The ReadyNAS Duo\NV+ v2 (ARM version) definitely sticks out as the top runner.

The one thing that is stopping me taking the plunge is I’m unclear on if it can cope with running Crashplan.

I understand that Crashplan is java based and that the older “sparc” Duo cannot run it. But is there a way to get Crashplan running on a newer Duo v2? I’ve searched then forums but it’s a little unclear. I have seen comments around the web stating folk have done it but not with any detail that gives me any confidence so splash my cash.

Any help on this matter would be much appricated.

  • I should also say that on the Settings, Network tab on the NV+, the Dosconer Button is greyed out and the test beside it says Not Available. My Ultra at home which is working fine has the Discover button available and says uPnP OK. Don't know if this is relevant or not.

Service.log.0 is loaded with stuff, but I don't have any clue how to interpret it.

The external IP address on my PC - on settings (network tab) - has a port number. I also see "discover" and UPnP (OK).

I am wondering if your local engine is able to communicate to the engine running on the NAS. Is the Windows Firewall on?
  • OK I have made some progress. After a lot of googling and interpretation of the results, I managed to tweak my router to allow me to get all the PCs on the LOCAL network to backup to the ReadyNAS Crashplan server and this has been running smoothly for a week or so. However I also want laptops to be able to back up when they are away from the local network and this is still causing problems.

What I notice is that when I login to the CP server on the NAS and look at the Settings, Network tab it reports the Internal address as 0.0.0.0 and the External address as 81.134.96.126. The actual external address is dynamic and changes every time the router reboots.

I use DynSite to update dyn.com for remote access and this works perfectly from one of the computers.

The actual External address is currently 81.130.76.197 and this is reported by Crashplan on the computers but even after rebooting the NAS unit and restarting CrashPlan the NAS version continues to report 81.134.96.126.

Does anyone know why CP on the NAS is seeing the wrong external address when CP on all the PCs are seeing the correct one?

    Thanks
  • Thanks Stephen - I had already done that but I think I have found the problem - again on the router!!. This is a new NAS which replaced an old Duo and was set to the same static address. What I had forgotten to do was to set the MAC address in the router's IP address Binding. Strangely almost everything worked, I was able to access the NAS but it seemed to mess up connections from the NAS while allowing internals ones to work. Anyhow now backing up from outside the office.

Thanks for all your help getting this sorted.

    Hi all

Is there no way at all to get CrashPlan (or other on-line storage providers) to work on a ReadyNAS version 1?

    Thanks a million.

I'm also very, very interested to know if someone already tried this on a v1...
I know I could use Readynas Vault, but it's quite expensive.

CrashPlan specifies 1 GB memory and an x86 processor in their minimum linux client requirements.

There are some companies that support FTP and/or RSYNC to their internet servers. Some of them have terms of service that exclude backup. Some backup providers (actually most) exclude NAS.

I haven't used them, so I have no recommendations one way or another.
  • I'm trying to follow the tutorial kindly posted by filzip77 a few years ago, but unsurprisingly things seem to have moved on since then. The current version of CrashPlan seems to be 3.6.3. I've been able to follow the steps as far as running the install.sh script inside the CrashPlan-install folder (incidentally I found I needed to reverse the order of the arguments in the ln command to get the correct result; I had to type "ln -s /c/home/daniel/ejre1.7.0_51 /usr/java/j2se" to get the appropriate symbolic link), but when I do I get the following output:

    Welcome to the CrashPlan Installer.

Press enter to continue with installation.

    Validating environment...
    detected root permissions
No Java VM could be found in your path
Would you like to download the JRE and dedicate it to CrashPlan? (y/n) [y] n

We're sorry, CrashPlan requires a valid Sun JRE or OpenJDK. Please install one and then
    rerun this installer. Exiting.

If I type env, I see both JAVA_HOME and PATH set correctly as per filzip77's tutorial, so on the face of it everything should be okay. Does anybody have any idea what's going wrong and what I might try next?

    Thanks!

    Daniel
  • Further to my previous message, I tried restarting my ReadyNAS Duo v2 and running the install script again, in case something about the environment variables wasn't set up correctly. Sure enough it started to work properly once I restarted the unit.

The original links filzip77 provided for the libmd5.so and libjtux.so files no longer work, but if you search for CrashPlan 3.6.3 on the Droboports site (link #2) you'll find them linked on the resulting page.

I'm using the Mac client, and on Mac, the file ui.properties is in ~/Library/Application Support/Crashplan. I found I had to add the host IP and port into that file rather than uncomment and edit them.

Looking forward to giving this a try now. Thanks for the guide!
