Data transfers stop/starting constantly

Hi,

My ReadyNAS 316, with firmware version 6.10.5 and has 6 X 6TB hard drives in it, ocassionally starts/stops or slows down/speeds up sending data to/from the devcice. I have rebooted the device with no change. A ping will never fail, even when data transfers stops. I used to get 100MB/s transfers, this will drop to 0MB/s at times for a few munutes.

I have tested on my computer, TV from the DLNA share and it start/stops the picture ocassionally. So I know it is not my computer nor is it the TV.

Any ideas?

What model disks are you using?

Have you run the disk test from the volume settings wheel?

      All 6 are WD60EFRX 6TB drives.

I do not believe they are the issue as all drives test are passed with no problems.

I did an OS reinstall yesterday after removing the NAS from the corner it sits in and giving a good vacuum to remove all the dust that has built up over 3 years. It seems better now, as no movies have skipped or buffered since.. But I will just have to test it more...

So not SMR, which is good.

If you are comfortable with ssh, then I suggest doing smartcrtl -x on these drives, and look at the error log.  I have used these drives (and still do have on in service).  Several others generated errors in the -x smart log that were not logged by the system, and did not show up in the smart stats.  I was seeing some issues, so I took them out of service.

I'm not suggesting that your drives are having the same issue, just that it is something I recommend looking at.
