DLNA disconnects with WDTV & Ultra2+

I upgraded from a DUO to an Ultra2+ recently. My setup has not changed- DLink DIR-655 and WDTV Live. Running latest version of ReadyDLNA. Everything is connected via cat5. With the DUO I had no issues, but with the Ultra2 i am seeing very intermittent disconnects.

While watching a movie, out of no where the video will stop and the WDTV will give a "lost network connection" type of error. No other insights as to why this is happening, if I go back and replay the movie it works fine. Its just maybe once per movie, at no specific time.

Anyone else seeing this?

thx

    Don't use Cat5. Use Cat5e or newer.

    What version of RAIDiator?

So you are running ReadyDLNA 1.0.24 (the latest version)?
  • Ah I was just using Cat5 as a catch-all, I should check and see what exactly I have back there as it could be a mix of 5 and 5e.

Latest version of RAIDiator, and yes 1.0.24 of DLNA.

Checking for faulty ethernet cables and checking for Cat5 (or older cables) would be what I would do. Though some Cat5 cables may do gigabit ethernet, many cables labelled Cat5 don't work reliably with a gigabit connection. So Cat5e or newer is the way to go.
  • Ok, checked all the cables and they are all CAT5e. Any other insights?

It could be related to buffer overrun in the router - the WD Live is 100 mbit, and the router doesn't appear to support 802.3x pause frames. The ultra is a lot faster than the duo, and the router might not have enough buffering. Try setting the ultra to 100 mbit (as a test) and see if the issue resolves. If it does, you might need to add a newer switch behind the router.
  • Thanks, but the D-Link router has a gigabit switch. Can i make any other adjustments to the router?

Yes I know it is gigabit. That is why there is an issue. The WDTV is 100 mbit, so the D-Link router is downspeeding that link. As a result, it has to buffer data it is receiving from the Ultra, while it is waiting for the WDTV link to become free. If it runs out of buffering, then data is lost - performance drops a lot, and connections can be lost.

The normal solution for this is ethernet flow control (802.3x) - but your D-link doesn't seem to support that.

You can confirm if this is a likely cause by setting the ultra temporarily to 100 mbit, and see if the problem disappears. If it does, you can buy an inexpensive gigabit switch which does support pause frames, and connect the WDTV (and other 100 mbit gear to that.
  • I'm experiencing the exact same problem. I upgraded to the Ultra 4 from a dlink dns-323.
With the 323 i never had connections problems. I tried setting the ethernet on the Ultra to 100mb on the readynas but it made no difference.

I also have 2 WDTV in both rooms and they both have the same problem.

How do you fix this? Ideas?
