Downgrading RN104 to RN102

Hi everyone,

I've been tasked with getting the data from two 4TB hard drives which were apparently in a RAID 1 setup in a Readynas RN104. I cannot access the original NAS, and don't know which order the disks were installed in, and they need me to help them get the data from the hard drives and setup another NAS on a different network. They don't need the 4 bays as the data they deal with is quite small, so I was thinking of recommending a RN102, updating the firmware to the latest version and installing the 2 HDDs in a random order and crossing my fingers that this works. I've seen that upgrading NAS's can work fine, but is it possible to "downgrade" to the 2 bay model from the 4 bay model? And is there any likelihood that this will work given I don't know the hard drive order and it's a different network?

Thanks

Ross

Provided that there were only 2 disks in the 104 and the volume was redundant that should be fine, though it is recommended to keep the disk order the same.

If a static I.P. was set then you may need to do some further steps if the I.P. range is different but that will be the same whichever model you go with.

You may also wish to consider the RN202 and RN212.

Do you know if the disks were encrypted?  If they were, you will need the key with the new NAS.

If not, then you can copy the data using a normal linux distro that supports btrfs.  Then if your migration fails, you'd still have the data backed up.

I'd recommend that they also put a backup plan in place once the new NAS is installed.

Also, I'd also recommend an RN202 or RN212 over an RN100 series.

Also what troubleshooting was done to conclude the problem was with the RN104 chassis and not a different problem?

If the problem was not with the chassis it will remain when moving the disks across to another chassis.
