Drive Lost after 5.3.11 update
ReadyNas Duo+. I updated the firmware to the latest 5.3.11 and on reboot of the NAS one of the drives(volumes) is not recognized and the blue light is flashing. I was able to reboot the NAS and do a volume scan, but it did not come back.
What options do I have here? Is there some way to attach the drive to my Win7 PC and run some kind of recovery program on it? Is there something I can try on the NAS itself?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhat status does RAIDar show?
The v2 should still be under warranty - did you contact Netgear support? - cwiebeAspirantThe NAS box itself appears to be fine. It's a failed drive I'm trying to recover data from.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou could try to clone it.
Netgear support does offer data recovery services, but they are not free. - cwiebeAspirantI was hoping for some kind of shareware/freeware data recovery.
This is the email sent to me:

I do know that linux reader will not work (though it is the easiest option for the duo v1). - cwiebeAspirantAll drives are SMART enabled these days. I'm disappointed there was no warning. Surely for something like a NAS it could interrogate the SMART data and return if the reliability of the drive is degrading. To go from functioning to paperweight with a single reboot seems unncecessary to me.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou don't always get a warning from SMART errors that a drive is failing.
So you got no emails about SMART errors? IF you check the SMART stats of the disk does it show a problem? - cwiebeAspirantNo email warnings from the NAS. Right now, I'm moving data from the remaining good drive to a windows mounted drive. Once that is done, I'll take out the drive, try to find an NFS2 driver for windows and see what's left on the failed drive.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou can also see the SMART stats on the windows system (even if it doesn't recognize the file system). Acronis drive monitor is a freeware package that will do that.
- cwiebeAspirantThanks Stephen, I'll take a look.
