MDGM - You were correct, the first drive which reported errors was fine. I performed a thorough analysis on it, twice and no errors were reported. The second disk that went bad during the sync was the problem. The tech, which was very knowledgeable could no understand what had occurred or why the second drive was only reported as bad during the sync. Lucky the raid was still in tack although it did not load. I was able to finally get my data back and bring the NAS back up with Netgear support.
a dd_rescue of the first drive did not work- that was done twice. I had to manually copy the data via a USB drive. - which was a nightmare and took for ever. one 2TB drive took more than 36 hours to copy. and i had to keep track of what was being copy so i would not completely fill the drive. The NAS while in debug mode does not give directory sizes.
personally, i think this was OS BUG. The Netgear support charge for data recovery was well worth it
