Dummies guide to synchronising 2 NAS'
Hi Team.
I'll apologise ahead of time but I've searched on this requirement and found numerous references to problems doing this, but no 'Dummies Guide' to configuring a back-up of one ReadyNAS to another directly.
I have a new NAS x314 on 6.1.19 and my original NV+ on 4.1.14. I'd like to mirror my new NAS to my old NAS directly, performed purely as a one-off each time, in order to maintain a full image for full DR scenarios.
Can someone take pity on me and provide me with the steps to set this up.
Thanks.

- vandermerweMasterThere are a couple of ways to do it.
I have set up my Nv+ with exactly the same users and shares as my 316, then I have one rsync pull backup job for each share that runs daily.
If you do it this way, run the first backup as nfs, then change the backup type to rsync for the future incremental backups. Rsync on the nv+ is a bit slow for a full backup but works well for incrementals. The help section in Frontview on the backup jobs tab will tell you how to setup the paths.
You could also setup rsync push jobs on the 314, but there is a small problem with these at present as the destination folder ends up being a subfolders of the share in question. I think Netgear may fix this sometime.
The advantage of pulling data is that you can schedule power on the nv+ for a 10 minute period each day, set all the backup jobs to run 5 minutes after power on. The nas will complete all the jobs however long they take then power itself down. This minimises up time for the backup nas.
Probably best for you to have an attempt now and post back with any specific problems. You'll learn more that way. - Thanks vandermerwe.
I'll have to research how to configure what you've proposed to set it up, but you've given me the sequence so I can use that as a guide.
Cheers. Stuart - itsjasperLuminaryI have a similar setup for backup as vandermerwe, however whilst this works for all my shares, I cannot figure out how to get the home folders copied using rsync under ReadyOS 6.2.
My issues are:
1) that I cannot 'enable' rsync for the home folders under 6.2, despite being able to use it for all other shares. (so I am forced to fallback to SMB)
2) I cannot see a way of 'selecting' the home folders remotely, be that using a 'pull' backup or a 'push' backup. /data/home doesn't seem to work - I just get the 'error connecting to host' message, irrespective of admin/guest/homefolder user account that I try. - SandsharkSenseiExcept that this does not fully synchronize the two devices. Any file deleted from the primary device is not also deleted from the backup. So if you have a lot of temporary files, the backup will ultimately fill up. From what I have Googled, the rsync command has the capability of doing it, but Netgear has not implemented the option from Frontview backup. All they have implemented is the ability to clean the destination directory before the backup, which makes every backup a full backup.

You're incorrect on this point - Netgear has implemented that option for rsync in frontview backup.
"Remove deleted files on source" is the name of the feature in OS4.
"remove deleted file on target" is the new name in OS6 - its on the advanced tab.
