Duo Sparc to Duo Intel?
My ReadyNas Duo (Sparc) is getting a bit long in the tooth (no firmware updates in a while, community addon support is getting thin), so I'm thinking of upgrading to the Intel version. How much work is this? Can I just pull the drives from one and drop them in the other without issue, or is there a more complex migration necessary?

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFirstly there is no Intel Duo. The new Duo v2 is a ARM device (different platform again. Reports on the web indicate devices such as the iPhone use ARM CPUs).
The Intel upgrade from the Duo would be the Ultra 2.
Either way you cannot simply migrate the disks across due to the different RAID format. See the last sentence of http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another
You'll need to transfer your data (e.g. across your network). - endquoteAspirantGot it. That's a bit disappointing but not too surprising. Is there much of a noticeable difference between the Duo and Duo v2 in terms of performance or features?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDuo v2 gains a few features (e.g. 3TB drive support, ReadyNAS Photos II), but it loses some others. Take a look at the Comparison Charts. The Duo v2 performance is much improved over the Duo (v1). The ARM CPU is much faster than the Sparc one.
For an existing ReadyNAS user, I'd recommend an Ultra 2 as an upgrade from the Duo (v1). - Coming from a Duo v1 to Duo v2, I'd say performance has much improved.
Read over gigabit ethernet has gone from average 40-45 to 80-85. (AFP)
Writes are anywhere from 30-40 (which was achieved by v1 with jumbo frames enabled, but I don't know if v2 supports jumbo frames - there are no options to enable on Dashboard :? )
Good improvement.
Sold my old v1 on Amazon for more than what I paid to buy v2 on Newegg.
