Duo to Android Streaming (Local and Remote)
Hi
I purchased my ReadyNAS duo for redundancy purposed for my photographs etc. but recently I became aware of all of the other great things it can do.
I also recently (I know, its 2011!) just got an Android based smartphone (HTC Wildfire) and I've been exploring all of the things it can do to.
Now looking at the Add-ons I see (thanks to Yoh-dah on twitter) that Orb offers a streaming client however it doesn't support the Duo., Super-poussin also seems to have developed the user add-on for streaming via a web browser. The browsing experience on my wildfire is poor so I'd rather avoid this interface.
I installed EStrongs file manager the other day which allows for WLAN or FTP access and can see the NAS but said that it wasn't setup for streaming and started copying the file selected across the WLAN, do I need to set up an add on to allow streaming (and the same quesiton for remote FTP access? as well is FTP ok? I use sFTP at work).
Ideally I'd like to be able to stream media from my NAS to my wildfire, anywhere. Has anybody set this up usng an existing app?
Thanks in advance for your input,
Paul
ps - the Duo has been great so far.

- stgeorgeGuideI've installed a few- which one are you specifically referring to?
- Bennp2000Aspirant
- Bennp2000AspirantCurrently having a devil of a time trying to use Andromote on the WLAN.
It doesn't seem to be able to see any of my movies nor my pictures. Again it seems better with music! - Bennp2000AspirantOk maybe I should make sure I can crawl before attempting to run:
Basically I've enabled ReadyDNLA and pointed it to three folders
\backup\music
\backup\videos
\backup\photos
each specified to their relevant videos, photos, or music.
Looking on Andromote I can only see music. However I copied a few of each relevant file type into the default media\ folder. I then changed the folder options to:
media\ all file types and I can see the files on Andromote.
I've read elsewhere that ReadyDNLA can only go one folder deep, is this true?
Is there a way I can check the DLNA behaviour of the NAS using a Win 7 Netbook? That way I can work out which bit is failing. - did you enable 'automatically update database' and/or 'rescan media files' ?
I played around with andromote (free ver) on my EVO, and it only works on wifi, pictures and mp3 seem to work, but playlist is limited to 4 tracks, video does not work although most of my video is either dvd rips, avi files, or m2ts blurays.
Neither estrongs or andromote actually stream, they appear to download and play the files, which is fine but obviously you have to wait for the whole thing to download before playing it.
Again, I repeat my first post, I do not think you will find an acceptable solution. What solutions you do find, will not be very user friendly or sufficent peformance.
There are also not very many or good upnp clients on android.
The duo will not transcode anything, so your android must be able to play the file type natively and the file must be the proper resolution for your phone. So mp3 and pictures should work, but video will be difficult.
Finally, if you intend to stream over 3g you must also have sufficient upload bandwidth on your internet connection, most are limited upload speeds.. my dsl is 3 meg down, but only .5 meg up. I can stream audio fairly well (using SUBSONIC), but video is either low quality and/or tends to buffer alot. - Bennp2000AspirantI think I'm going to have to agree with you for now...
I'm happy with Andromote for home use (its working now, it just took a while to sync the lot!)
All of this has brought to my attention how powerful DLNA can be and I'm sorely tempted to invest in something that can stream from the NAS to my main TV (any suggestions? or is this plagued by the same issues?). - to be honest, DLNA is more aggravation and annoyance than its worth, in my opinion.
Your best bet for home streaming is to find something that can use windows shares (CIFS/SMB) directly without having to go through an intermediatary like DLNA or other server software.
I use XBMC for all my home media playback. - Bennp2000Aspirantha!
I've found that you can use Tversity + Windows PC + NSWplayer to stream files over wifi or 3g. Not perfect as the PC will be running all the time but then again this wasn't strictly necessary, more a see if it can.
Its a bit of a shame I didn't think of this earlier and get a higher power NAS unit.
I'm going to install Tversity on the PC and then dig out my Xbox 360 which is lying unloved (in fact its right here, apart from the power lead which I can't find!) and see whats what.
I'm guessing this is going to be a strong NO but Andromote isn't going to be able to act as a remote between Tversity and the 360 is it? I don't think the latter will play? - danniman2002Aspiranthi,
I found a way to stream video and mp3 music from my duo to my Xperia X10. I have only tested it with mp3 and avi (divx/xvid), and it works great. I have not tried streaming photos, but I don't see, why that shouldn't work as well.
here is how, I set it up:
Readynas: I activated dnla on the nas, and forwarded Port 8200 to the nas on my router for 3g streaming.
Android: Fetch these apps from Market: PlugPlayer (paid app) for streaming, Rockplayer (I pulled it from market, but you might have to get it from http://rockplayer.freecoder.org/index_en.html . I think it was removed from market) or Vplayer ( paid app) for playing video files. For browsing the duo I use astro with the smb module. I have not tried it with 3g yet, so I don't know if it works, but wifi works great.
I installed the applications, and opened plugplayer with wifi enabled on the phone. It should pick up your dlna devices by itself. It did with me. Go to the "Devices" tab, and press menu, open "advanced settings", and make it use the phone as renderer for video. Test it on wifi. if it works, then go to the "Devices" tab again and long press the dnla device ( the duo of course), and press edit. In "Base URL" use "http://YOUR EXTERNAL IP:8200", to allow the phone to find your nas via 3g.
Now you should be able to stream video, mp3 and probably photos as well, when you are on the move :) - stgeorgeGuide...."I have not tried it with 3g yet, so I don't know if it works, but wifi works great"
