I have now ordered the following switching adaptor:

I hope to be able to give a positive reply on this within the next days.
@StephenB: What do you mean with "brick"? I am not a native english speaker. Do you mean the integrated circuit of the switching adaptor? Could it be that it is worn out?
The starting current of the 2TB HDD is 2A. This means 4 A for the drives plus the current which is drawn by the chassis fan at full speed at starting-up.
