It sounds like you have the exact same config as us and most likely it's because you're running firmware 4.2.19. It's not officially supported yet, the latest version officially supported is 4.2.17.
We've had multiple tickets open with Egnyte and Netgear regarding weird file locking and "opened by another user" errors over the course of the last few months. We're testing the Vmware appliance route, and if that doesn't work we're moving away completely from this configuration. It's been nothing but headaches for our customer unfortunately... and more than likely it's a Netgear issue and NOT an egnyte issue .. the vmware appliance instance route should prove that out because it will pull netgear out of the picture completely. So far it's working.
