Expansion limit RN104
I have two 1 TB Seagate Barracuda disks that i removed from my Duo V1 when expanding to 2x2 TB, and now i am thinking about getting a RN104 and put these 2 disks in this.
Does the 8 TB expansion limit mean that i can not expand up to 4x4 TB to get a total of 12 TB RAID 5, without doing a factory default?
Would it be better if i just got 2x4 TB from the beginning.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe 104 uses a different filesystem. I don't think it has the 8TB limit.

NAS-purposed drives are a better choice then consumer desktop drives, and almost the same price. Their warranties are also longer. The WD40EFRX is one option, the ST4000VN000 is another. I like the WDC red drives myself, I have 8 installed in various NAS, and they have worked out very well.
- lundmiloLuminaryActually i am using WD Red in my Duo, and when i get the RN104, i was planning on eventually usind Reds. I just think it would be a shame to have 2 perfectly working 1 TB drives on the shelf, when they could be used for storage. I was then planning on expanding with 2 additional 4 TB Red drives, and even later exchange the 1 TB drives with 4 TB, to get a total of 12 TB.
- martinhjLuminaryYes I would wipe the 2x1TB and then stick them in the new 104 and let it build from scratch then add the bigger drives later. Then as you add bigger drives and dont need them swap them out....its what I did.
I do agree with Stephen the WD reds are great. I have had various drives and ended up running my RN104 with a mix of Samsung 1TB drives (that originally came free with a RN duo) and WD red's. I've now just got WD reds and I have to say I do notice the difference in volume. The new RN104 was quiter than my old Duo but with the Red's in it is quieter still.
