Expansion with drive not on HCL
ReadyNAS 104, with 3x2TB Seagate drives on the HCL in X-RAID (RAID5)
Receiving support aside, because I know that's an automatic "no"...
I happen to now have a spare, but perfectly functioning 2TB Hitachi
Would the 104 refuse to use the Hitachi, or, to quote Barbossa, is the HCL "more like a set of guidelines".
That said, and as I understand it, should the Hitachi go south my data is still protected because of single disk redundancy in RAID5, yes?
Yes, these are naive questions, but I'd prefer to be informed over the slight embarrassment :)

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe RN104 firmware does not enforce the HCL.
If the Hitachi fails later, the array would be intact but unprotected. Any other problem would destroy the array, You would need to replace the drive to re-establish redundancy.
The other "automatic" - RAID is not a substitute for backup. If you don't have a backup plan in place, you should address that. - gryhndAspirant

Yes, that's exactly what I figured, thank you.
My data backs up to an external USB drive. - gryhndAspirant

Just to be clear, this would be the case with any 4th drive inserted under X-RAID, yes? Is dual redundancy even available with X-RAID under a RN104?
I'm going to go spelunking, but if you happen to know...thanks in advance. - gryhndAspirantApparently the RN104 can do dual redundancy, but I'd have to switch to flex raid, set up RAID6, then delete the volume and start over
However performance suffers, so that's out. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User

However I know there are different firmwares and some simply did not work. That may have been an embedded hCL, but you may have issues, not because of the brand or the size, but just the version.
Otherwise, if everything boots up, I haven't had any problems with my units and a mixture of drives.

Thanks!
Newegg actually had a special on the Seagate 2TB drives the other day ($79 and free S/H) so I picked one of those up. At that price why screw around :D
It arrived today and is now being incorporated into the array. - DeeCee521Aspirant
