Failover?

We have two of the ReadyNAS 516's on the same LAN. We are replacing an existing Windows 2008 server.

We want to have the primary NAS for storage and the 2nd as a backup (really as a failover- and we know it will be manual).

How can we quickly get the 2nd unit up as the primary in the case of a total failure of the primary?

We have setup with ReadyNAS Replicate, but this looks like a backup and the restore process takes a while.

  • We set this up using RSYNC for each share to automatically run hourly. If the main RN fails and is no longer on the network, we will rename the secondary to the same name as the primary and reboot.

User accounts and passwords do need to be re-established.

Once the secondary NAS is running with the primary name, users can connect again using the same mappings. If the password is different they will need to login again.

We did not need to change the IP address. Just be care when if you bring up the origional NAS that the two devices don't have the same names.

I am thinking this depends on how users are accessing the NAS.

If for instance, you have it provisioned with a DNS name, you could simply redirect that name to the identically configured backup system.
