Firmware Upgrade advice please? for legacy (x86) NAS

Thank you, evan2! Other than occasionally having to replace drives (well, it is 10 years old now ;), I don't seem to have problems with it.
Now that I've gotten this far...thinking about the OS6 upgrade.
Nervous, though...I hate when things are working fine, and then I break them via an "Upgrade"...lol
if your legacy nas is working and you do not already have another nas to offload/backup your data to, then generally there is no reason to worry about doing the OS6 upgrade.
Since the os6 upgrade requires a factory default (ie losing all your data), it can be quite daunting and time consuming if you have a lot of data.
That said, if you are in a position where you are able to easily backup/restore your data, and/or if you are looking to start expanding your nas with new larger disks, it might be a good idea to switch to os6 before you do the hard drive upgrades so you have a new and continually updated os with no potential issues with future upgrade paths.
A couple other things to consider, if you buy a new readynas with OS6, you can backup your data to the new nas and get everything working on it, then you can safely upgrade your old nas to os6 and use the old nas to backup your data from your new nas.
If you don't wan to spend money on a new nas, you could also look into used nas or older models readynas that can be upgraded to os6 before put into use.
Thanks, TeknoJnky, I thought I read in a thread here that there is a method to upgrade without having to start from scratch. Maybe I misread, since it wasn't my initial focus.
In any case, I always do a full backup any time I do an upgrade (to plain external drives). So basically I backed up over the last few days, before trying to figure out my next firmware upgrade.
I think you're right, though, this may wait until I'm ready to upgrade disks again. I'm still <16TB, and working fine with that. (AFAIK)

yeah upgrading a legacy nas to os6 will require a full backup and restore.
additionally, if you are using any older apps, you may want to check those apps (or alternative apps) have been updated to work on os6 too.
Also, good that you already have backups, as no nas by itself is foolproof or can protect from all types of failures or situations.
