First experience with failed disk

I have a RN104 in RAID5 (4x 2TB) configuration and one disk failed. This is my first time having to replaced a failed disk (also have a RN316 and a RN102). I backed up to a portable USB drive before attempting to replace the failed disk. Pulled out the offending disk and popped-in the replacement and nothing happened after waiting for an hour. No choice but to reboot it and after it came back, it started to sync. 3 days later sync complete. Feeling good.

That is the right process.  What model is the replacement disk?  Most desktop drives are SMR, which is not a good technology for ReadyNAS.

You might also want to run the disk test from the volume settings wheel.  That will run in the background - the log will show the status when it completes.

I went cheap with desktop disks when I set up RAID5 but I am setting aside money for NAS-grade ones. Just did not have the budget then. Great idea I will run the disk test now.
