Format NTFS External USB Errors on Win10 machine
I use an external USB drive to backup my ReadyNas daily. It's formated NTFS (by the ReadyNas). Every now and then I need a file from the drive and I take the external drive and plug it into a Win10 machine, Win10 reports is has problems and wants to scan it. I do not let the scan start, but the drive performs as expected and I retrieve the file and go on about my business. Then when I put it back on the ReadyNas I get the following error and have to reformat it:
System: External storage 'ST1000LM024_HN-M101MBB' might not have been safely ejected after last use. This device will be read-only. Plug it into its native operating system and repair it before it will be writeable.
Shouldn't this drive be portable between the two systems?

Does the NTFS format utility in ReadyNas have a problem?
It sounds like it might.

Are you dismounting the drive on the readynas before you remove it?
It dismounts automatically after the backup, and remounts properly as long as it doesn't get mounted on a Windows machine first.
I rotate two identical drives daily over and over without incidents. Only on the rare occasion where I mount the drive on a Windows machine do the problems start. It doesn't matter which physical drive.

It's odd that Windows asks to scan it. Normally the dismount in the backup job should prevent that from happening.
Have you tried telling Windows not to fix it?
