It might be just as fast to copy the files over your network with nfs. Write speeds to the RN104 are about 50 MB/s on a gigabit network. Copying first to the hard drive, and then again to the RN104 seems unlikely to be faster.
Also, step (4) should be unformatting the 3 TB drive. Though you can do that after you hot-insert it into the RN104.
