Frontview Backup Job Always Performs FULL Backup

I have several backup jobs set up in Frontview Backup. Each of these are set to perform Full Backups only every 3-4 weeks. The backup jobs that are backing up data from my Windows machines are working fine. I see incremental backups the majority of the time and then every few weeks a full backup (when examining the logs). However, the backup jobs that are copying data from the shares on my Ultra 4 to a USB drive seem to be performing a FULL backup every time.

I have checked the timestamps on the files on both the Ultra 4 and the USB drive and the times appear to be the same. However, I noticed that on the Ultra 4 the "A" attribute is set for all of my files, even though they have just been backed up. Not sure if this is what is causing them to be backed up again or not, but it does seem curious.

Anyone have any ideas why I would always be getting a FULL backup when I have INCREMENTAL specified for just my jobs copying data from shares on my Ultra 4 to a USB drive?

An example of the settings I have for each job is listed below:

BACKUP SOURCE: Share: Data
BACKUP DESTINATION: USB_Backup PATH: Data
SCHEDULE: Perform backup every 24 hours is checked, between various times, Monday through Friday are checked
SCHEDULE FULL BACKUP: Every 3 weeks
REMOVE THE CONTENTS OF BACKUP DESTINATION BEFORE FULL BACKUP: Checked
AFTER BACKUP CHANGE OWNERSHIP OF FILES IN BACKUP DESTINATION: Checked

Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • I may have fixed the problem, not sure.

I used the DOS "attrib" command to go through all of my NAS shares and remove the "A" attribute for all the files and folders. Since I have just completed a full backup of all of these shares this should have been done by the system anyway. Then I changed the BACKUP SOURCE in each of my backup jobs from "Share: XXXX", which was the shared volume name, to "Remote: Windows (Archive Bit)". It now appears the "A" attribute is getting modified when a file changes and reset after the backup completes. The incremental backup jobs now appear to only be backing up the files with the "A" attribute set.

So it seems that if in the dropdown list for BACKUP SOURCE you choose the shared folder name it will always backup the entire shared volume and never reset the "A" on the files. The selection for SCHEDULE FULL BACKUP: Every XX Weeks does not appear to impact anything and there does not appear to be anyway to do an Incremental backup when the share name is used.

Still not sure I fully understand, but right now it does appear to be working.

FYI, I am running RAIDiator 4.2.25 on an Ultra 4.
  • Thanks. It appears I have it working with Rsync now. I had a little trouble since for 2 of my 3 shares I had checked the "Hide this share when a user browses the ReadyNAS for available shares." I guess Rsync cannot see these even though I specifically give them the path and the logon ID. I had to make these shares visible to the world so that Rsync would work. Wish I did not have to do that but they are still PW protected.

    Again, thanks for the help.
