FTPing files from Security DVR to ReadyNAS Duo

I have been tring to set up my CCTV DVR so that it will FTP video files to my ReadyNas Duo without success.

I have been able to successully run a test FTP from the DVR to my laptop and so have confirmed that the DVR is capable of sending the data.

DVR SIDE
FTP details held in my DVR are as follows
Server URL : 192.168.0.2 (the address of my NAS)
FTP Port : 21 (standard I beleive)
User Name : Joe Blogs
Password : xxxxxxxxx

I have set the DVR to send a video file every time Camera1 is triggered. I can see in the DVR Event_Log that events are being triggered and that FTP is attempted, but it fails to connect or send the file.

NAS Side
I Have enabled FTP in Standard File Protocols (Port=21, Authentication=User, Upload Resumes=Disabled, Passive ports xxxx to yyyy, Masquerade=BLANK)
I have a share named="JoeBloggs" (not my real name :? )
FTP/S Default Access = Read/Write, (no specific host/users/groups further specified)

The following FTP_Log entried may offer some clues.
Aug 15 15:02:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): FTP session opened.
Aug 15 15:02:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): Preparing to chroot to directory '/home/ftp'
Aug 15 15:02:48 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): USER ftp2: Login successful.
Aug 15 15:02:51 nas-08-FD-4B proftpd[5028] 192.168.0.2 (192.168.0.254[192.168.0.254]): FTP session closed.
Note: I have tried many many permutations, the above /home/ftp attempt is just one of many.

No files are being copied.
Am I missing some key setup steps?
I don't think I have told the DVR all the information it requires to send the file. For example, how does the DVR know which share/folder to place the file?
Any guidance from the forum would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
MikeQ

SInce the DVR configuration includes the "server URL" not the server IP address, then entering 192.168.0.2/FTPshare in that field should accomplish that. Did you try it?

yes, I tried this (192.168.0.2/FTPshare, fttp://192.168.0.2/FTPshare and many other permutations).
    Ok.

Then the feature you need is redirection. I don't know of any way to do this for FTP via FrontView, but it might be possible with SSH access. Some ddns providers also support redirection (but I don't know of any free services that do this).
  • Question closed. No solution found. I may revisit at a later date. Thanks to all for the guidance given.
  • Hi there. Did you ever solve the problem. I'm curious because I'm experiencing exactly the same problem as You, but with another camera though (Supra IPC-1)
I also think I've tried *everything* but with no luck. I can access the share by mean of Total Commander's build-in FTP client and I can save the camera pictures in the Filezilla server.
There must be something with in the ReadyNAS Duo's way of handling the data from a surveillance camera which doesn't fit the need from the camera - and obviously Filezilla must be able to handle the needs.
I seems to have been a common problem for some time now, as several users have been asking about the same over the years. I seems to be that it has never been solved! :(
  • Hi Movsman, no solution to this I'm afraid.

In the end it seemed to boil down to who should fully qualify the destination of the file, the DVR or the NAS. Each expert pointed to the other.

My opinion is that it is the sender who should fully define the location, but I am certainly not an FTP expert.

So, there we are; the DVR manufacturer states that the NAS must manage the receiving location & the NAS community state it must be the DVR. Stalemate. :(

Let me know if you "know" who should deal with the destination of the file DVR or NAS. I'd be interested to know.

A robust client implemention (DVR in your case) should allow specifying the folder name in the URL. If it did that (and used the full URL when it connected to the NAS) you would have no problem. This change in the DVR software would be very easy to make.

A robust server implementation (the NAS in your case) should also have the ability to specify a default target directory. The NAS already can do this for HTTP/web pages, but cannot for FTP. The ability to do that on the NAS is likely a bit more work than it is on the client, however it is certainly doable.

So my answer is that ideally both devices should be able to independently deal with it.
