Harddisk installation question about X-RAID2 limitation
First of all, sorry for my poor English.
I bought a RN104 and two 4TB HD yesterday. I plan to buy another 4TB HD in next week (out of order problem) to build a X-raid2 volume finally. I can not wait for the third HD so that I build a X-RAID2 volume yesterday. Here is my question:
1. The max capacity of X-raid2 is 18TB,is that right? Is there a possibility that X-raid2 system support more capacity?
2. The max additional capacity of X-raid2 is 8TB, is that right? I mean that if I add the third 4TB HD in the next week without rebuilding the volume, I can only add the 4th HD whose size should be limited to 4TB. I am thinking about the possibility that in the future when the OS6 support larger HD,such as 6TB or more, whether I could add a 6TB HD in the 4th slot without rebuilding the volume? (Because if I do not rebuild the volume when I add the 3rd 4TB HD, I can not add a 6TB HD in the future:4TH(3)+6TB(4)>8TB(limitation of X-RAID2))
Thanks for your attention

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe limitations for expansion (both the 8TB and 16TB limits) that affected e.g. 4.2.x do not affect OS6.
The expansion limitations for legacy OSes have been explained elsewhere.
If the RN104 supports 6TB disks yes you could add a 6TB HDD. Though with 3x4TB and 1x6TB you would not get any more capacity than with 4x4TB. You would need at least two 6TB drives to get vertical expansion. - njbambooAspirantThank you for your reply! I have gotten a misunderstand of X-RAID2. Now I am clear of it! Thanks again!
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredNote: When replacing a disk only replace one disk at a time. Wait for the array to finish syncing before replacing the next disk.
So if you had e.g. 4x4TB disks installed. You would say put a 6TB disk in, wait for it to rebuild and only once that has finished add the next 6TB disk. - njbambooAspirantThanks for your advice. But I totally forgot that I should add new disks one by one because my little daughter kept all my attention yesterday. I just added two disks to the slots, the readyNAS system seemed to be frozen because of my mistake and had never response even I pressed the power button for many many times. I tried to access the system by enter the local IP address in Google Chrome and selected "the factory default" in system-setup page. Then the RN104 began to restart and the screen showed the message : the factory default, Please wait... I waited for its reboot for about 20 min, but nothing happened! It seemed that this time the RN104 was really frozen. At last, I unplugged the cable and reconnected it to my RN104. My RN104 began booting and automatically entered to the factory default. The OS6 was rebuilding the volume as X-RAID2 (RAID 5) mode. But once again the system was freezing today when I used the ReadyNAS Remote software to log in and try to access the system. It was very strange! I can not access to the system-setup page this time and also nothing happened when I pressed the power button. I unplugged my RN104 again! After reboot the OS6, everything is ok now. X-RAID2 continued to rebuild the volume from where it stopped. But I am worrying about whether the 2nd system frozen left any error to the volume which is rebuilding by X-RAID2 now. The status page gave me the detail information about 4 disks when I hoover the mouse on the green circle one by one. ATA error count=0. Does that mean that there is no problem on all of my 4 disks?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCould be an issue with one or more of the disks, the memory or something else.
You should open a support case and if it is an online case attach your logs to your case. - njbambooAspirantHow can I open the support case and attach my log?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou can do all this at my.netgear.com
- njbambooAspirantThank you very much for your advice. I just submit a new case by select "my support" on my.netgear.com. Do I just wait for the reply and then upload my RN104 log files, or just upload the log files now?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou may as well upload the logs zip file now to save time.
- njbambooAspirantOK,I just submitted a new case and uploaded my log zip file. Waiting for the reply. Thank you very much!
