Has my Duo Died?

Recently the fan on my Duo kept kicking in with mad rpm's. So I would click the "recalibrate" button in "health" to sort the problem. Also the capacity was at 91%. I thought it could be something to do with that with the Duo trying to cope. Using 2 Samsung spinpoint F4's. Which I patched a couple of years ago when they first came about.
The Duo has been on pretty much 24/7 for 3 to 4 years. Not sure if it's a V2, but here's the numbers below from the home screen.
(update edit: done some research and I think it's a V1)
Model: ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Serial: 1VB183RF00059
Firmware: [1.00a043]
Memory: 1024 MB [2.5-3-3-7]

So, yesterday I was trying to recalibrate the fan as it was running at about 6000 rpms. And after a couple of cycles of recalibration and reboots there still seemed to be a problem. Which eventually resulted in either not being able to read the data on the 2 Samsung discs, or they've been wiped. Also I can't connect over CIFS, but it will connect over AFP, but no data showing, just shares.
I have toggled CIFS on and off in "standard file protocols".
Can enter Frontview, which reads 0% on the volumes 1+2 and neither showed any problems. Before and after the mystery of a data wipe, or not.
Can't reboot the device from Frontview, it just reverts back to the home screen in Frontview, not showing the message for rebooting.
Fan now not going crackers.
All settings and shares seem to be unaffected in Frontview. All still looks the same.
Logs have been mysteriously wiped in the last hour/couple of reboots.
Have reconnected all leads and powered off the Duo, unplugging from mains etc. Also rebooted router and bypassed netgear switch I was using. Now cables straight from router to mac and Duo.
Using an Imac and have rebooted, also with no changes with updates or anything the last week or so.
Still using Snow leopard 10.6.8. Again no recent changes.

As I type this I've remembered the last time it tried to connect over CIFS it asked for my password, which is unusual. Everything looks like it's been wiped except all settings look the same. I'm wondering if a complete factory reset my restore the Duo.
Would being at 91% have made the Duo do a reset of some kind?
If my data is still on the discs and it just can't be accessed how is the best way to save and reload?
Not sure about my backup on separate caddy. I've been lazy in that department. Have another backup of my important stuff on mac also on a Drobo. But that's not the stuff from the Duo.

I think I've managed to think of most of the info that I can give.
Any ideas people as to what might've happened, and my best course of action?

Thanks in advance

After several reboots of Duo and mac things changed, then back to the same.

Changed some ethernet cables around and after a reboot the discs were back to showing 90% in Frontview again. So maybe the data is still there, but just can't be accessed.

Then a couple of reboots later trying to toggle CIFS on and off, Frontview showed 0% on discs again. And CIFS refuses a connection whever it's selected in Frontview or not. In fact I unselected AFP and CIFS, rebooted. Then selected AFP and CIFS and Frontview recognised the selection of AFP, but not CIFS.

Changed the ethernet cable from Duo to router. No change. Maybe the ethernet port on Duo is messed up.
Rebooted and then got flashing blue light. So now completely useless.
    Duo just getting progressively worse.
Google flashing blue light and found link to re-flash firmware via usb. Does anyone think this might be a solution?
Or my Duo is just knackered?
