Making progress. SSH is installed and I can connect to it with putty.
I cant find a way of uploading the conf virtual file as internet explorer shows NAS but goes to the HTTPS address and file zill cannot connect. The password is correct as I use it in firefox.

Do you mean Windows file explorer? Try entering \\192.168.8.238 in the address bar (using \\, NOT //).
You can also try opening CMD and then entering
net use * /d /y
net use z: \\192.168.8.238\c /user:admin nas-admin-password
The two different slash directions matter, so be very careful on the typing. Use the actual NAS password of course.
As noted above, the SMB 1 client on the PC has to be enabled for this to work. Also, the NAS admin password can't be the factory default of netgear1.
Ignore any warning on the first command. If both commands are successful, you will mount the full data volume as drive letter Z on the PC.

Is FTP enabled for any share on the NAS?
What FTP client are you using?
