how does this work?
Okay so i bought my RN 104 a while back and slapped 2 3tb wd reds in there in raid 0, now i would like to use it to back up my data in my computer.
i started by going to the readynas admin page for my nas then i went to backup and created a new backup job. now this is where i got stuck with roaming the internet for any useful information at all because i couldnt find ANYTHING in the manual that actually explained how to do this, all i got from it is that your source is the data you want backup and destination is the path where it gets backuped too.
now there are so many options to use here and i have no idea what to do..
all i want is to backup the I:\ and S:\ drives to my NAS but all that ive tried seemingly only bring up errors like "error backup job 'xxx': source cannot be mounted on the system" and error backup job 'xxx': source path does not exist.
is source host supposed to be my ip? my computer name?
is path supposed to be the network path to my harddrive? or I:\ (//computername)?
its so confusing and there doesnt seem to be even any guides out on youtube.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe source host would be the I.P. of the PC
The path would be from the network path (the NAS would only be able to access your PC using the network path not what you use locally on your PC)
So if you would connect from another PC using \\ip.address.of.pc\myshare\myfolderinshare
on the NAS you would enter:
source host: ip.address.of.pc
path: myshare/myfolderinshare
N.B. The ReadyNAS uses Linux so the / goes the other way to what you would use on your PC.
You are using RAID-0? Is this a single volume or two separate RAID-0 volumes (one on each disk)?
Note that if using a single RAID-0 volume across both disks if either disk fails all data is lost. If you have a separate volume for each disk if one disk fails only the data on that disk is lost.
Welcome to the forum! - MammothJerkAspiranti have it like this now but it still doesnt work

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI:/ is a local path or a mapped network drive, it is not the network path.
If you access your I:\ from another PC what is the path you go to? It should be something like \\ip.address.of.pc\sharename and this sharename won't have a slash in it or a :
Have you made sure you have shared this drive from your PC? It may not be shared by default. - MammothJerkAspirantive done my best to share the drive but all the guides ive seen uses the "share..." button in the "Sharing" tab, but for me on this drive the "Share..." button is greyed out so i cannot access it from my other computers.
i keep getting the error
windows cannot access \\MAMMOTHJERK\Storage
you do not have permission to access \\MAMMOTHJERK\Storage. contact your network administrator to request access
it does however show up as if shared
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhat happens if you try browsing to \\192.168.0.101\Storage ?
Try
Source Host: 192.168.0.101
Path: Storage - MammothJerkAspirantnavigating to \\192.168.0.101\Storage on the 192.168.0.101 computer is no problem, it shows up that im connecting to 192.168.0.101 via the left side network. i can connect to \\192.168.0.101 on my other computers but i cannot access Storage
same error as before with that host and path.
am i using right type and name? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you setup the network permissions for that share correctly? Under the sharing preferences for the I:\ (or whatever the local drive or folder is) there may be advanced options that you should look at.
It sounds like you haven't configured permissions to allow access to that share from any computer other than the PC it resides on. Or you are connecting as a user that is not allowed access. You can see all shares if logged in as the wrong user (this includes guest access) but you can't access shares that you are not given access to.
have you entered login credentials to connect to the network share in the backup job settings? - MammothJerkAspirantAlright i think it should work now, searched around some more and got some more errors before i finally made it.
you'd think this would be as simple as activating sharing on a folder but oh well.
my source is host:192.168.0.101 and path:storage
destination is name:share: readydrop both host and path are blank
will this now backup Storage to a folder named Storage in readydrop or will the folders inside of storage go directly inside of readydrop?(i want the latter)
thanks for all the help =) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI think you would need to specify the path Storage on the destination as well.
- MammothJerkAspirantokay thank you for your help
