how to ACTUALLY set up a password protected network share
Ive been through forums and google all day to do a simple thing.
I need to have a password protected network share
ie \\netgear\share that asks for a username and password every time (doesnt stay logged in)
Ive tried setting permissions as admin for a share in \data, doesnt work. Windows says I dont have permission
Tried setting up a user. same story. dont have permission
My regular shares that dont require a username and password still work
I cant be the only person in the world who wants to do this, but I cant find any instructions that work..

Hi thetedium,
that's a good question, I'm struggeling with this every time I factory default my unit... ;)
Here's what I did to get it working for me:
- I created a new user, putting it in the default 'users' group
- I created a new share
- In the settings of the new share under 'Network Access'->'SMB'->'Security' I did:
+ untick 'READ/WRITE' for 'Everyone'
+ tick 'Read only' for 'users' (OPTIONAL: so all my users have READ access on that share)
+ tick 'READ/WRITE' for my newly created user
- In the settings of the new share under 'File Access'->'Security' I did:
+ set 'Folder Owner' to my newly created user
+ set 'Folder group' to 'users'
+ untick 'READ/WRITE' for 'Everyone'
+ tick 'READ/WRITE' for 'Folder Owner'
+ tick 'READ ONLY' for 'Folder group' (OPTIONAL: this one is also optional for you, it's just that all my users in 'users' group also have READ permission on the file system)
I hope this gets you to your goal.

The trick is to actually NOT to use the File Access tab. I wish that tab wasn't there! (buried somewhere in advanced settings would be better).
- Create a user.
- Create a share.
- Access the share settings.
- Under Network Access / SMB:
- Uncheck Everyone.
- Check the relevant permission for your user.
- Under File Access:
- Do NOT touch anything!
- Done... That's it!
For convenience in Windows (Windows 10 can also be annoying with SMB credentials, so do that):
- Search for Manage Network Passwords in Start Menu.
- Add an entry with the path of your NAS and the user's credentials.
- Use either the name or the IP of your NAS, but you'll have to use the same to connect. Or add an entry for each.
If you want to fix your existing share:
- Access its settings.
- Under File Access / Reset:
- Reset permissions.
- Confirm the settings under Network Access.
(In most cases) There is NO need to use File Access as you already filter the users with the Network Access permissions.
Trust me, I have configured dozens of ReadyNAS units.
oh my god. I clicked reset permissions inside this one share Im trying to put a password on and now all my existing shares are broken. Windows 10 now asks me for a password for EVERYTHING and then does not let me in with any account. How do I fix it?
jak0lantash - these instructions create a share for which windows does not ask for a password
asdf47 - these instructions create a share which windows blocks saying I dont have permission
- Sounds like you're not adding the correct credentials in the Manage Network Passwords panel.
Please try with something simple, like testuser / password, create it, give permissions, test it.
Your NAS isn't joined to Active Directory, is it?
Do you use the same workgroup name on the NAS and on the PC?no active directory
both on same workgroup
NETWORK ACCESS
unticked everyone
ticked is admin, new user, login
FILE ACCESS
done nothing
owner guest
group guest
ticked everyone, owner, group, admin
If I change anything in file access it locks me out instead of asking for password
adding a windows credential does nothing because it is not currently asking me for a password
How do i make the newly created share require a password?
