How to backaup NAS
New to this...
I have an Readynas duo v2 with 2 1Tb hardrives.
Modell: ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Fast programvara: RAIDiator 4.1.9 [1.00a043]
Minne: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
Volym C: Online, X-RAID, 2 diskar, 78% av 925 GB använt
I would like to have an backup of the NAS and was thinking if I could buy one extra drive.
The plan would the be to:
1:Remove one drive (drive "Olle"), put the drive in a safe place.
2:Put a new clean drive(drive "Nisse") in the empty slot.
3:To mounts later I remove Nisse to a safe place and replace it with Olle to have a new backup of the NAS
Will this work???

- vandermerweMasterIt is possible to do it this way, but not recommended.
The drives are not designed to be removed an reinserted as frequently as this.
You are better off using the RAID protection against drive failure and using an external drive as your backup - put your extra drive into a cheap enclosure and use this to do regular scheduled backups via USB. - ulfrickardssonAspirantThanks for quick reply!
I have been solving backup like this for 2 years but its not working so well. I get questions from windows --Are you sure... etc and virus programs stops every proccess so it takes 2-3 day to do a backup.
And during 2 days I have already started to do more stuff that I need to re-backup and it always ends with an incomplete backup.
Or is it possoble to do the backup directly without using a laptop/computer?? - vandermerweMasterYes of course.
You can attach a USB drive to one of the USB ports and then set up a backup job using the Duo's software. I had a quick look at the manual for the Duo and setting up backups is explained quite well. I have an Ultra6 plus and older NV+ so I am not familiar with the software interface, but on my devices it is very simple to set up, either to backup entire volume or share by share. - ulfrickardssonAspirantThanks!
Incredible, havent thought about this for years! - PapaBear1ApprenticeBTW - If you are running 4.1.9 you do NOT have a Duo v2. There may be a v2 sticker on the bottom but that is a minor hardware update that did not affect the basic operation of the Duo. The true Duo v2 runs RAIDiator 5.3.x (currently 5.3.5) and is totally incompatible with the the sparc based Duo (v1). The Duo v2 also says v2 after Duo on the lower right corner of the drive bay door. Confusing I know. We can thank the marketing guys for doing this to us.
- ulfrickardssonAspirantAhh, thanks for this. I am actually looking for a bigger drive and since I saw the V2 sticker on the bottom I thougt, -"This must be V2"
Guess I should have understood that it wasnt.... Then 2Tb is max I guess. - PapaBear1ApprenticeThat is correct. Drives over 2TB need the GPID system rather than the MBR system for drives and installing GPID is simply not possible for the Sparc based units.
- ulfrickardssonAspirantAnd its SATA2? SATA3 dosent work?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced User
SATA3 is compatible with SATA2, so SATA3 drives are fine.ulfrickardsson wrote: And its SATA2? SATA3 dosent work? - ulfrickardssonAspirantBeen trying to backup with NAS since started this topic. First with a NTFS formatted disk and now with a EXT3 formatted disk.
It is incredible slow. It has now copied 6Gb in 20 hours. Is this normal?
