If all else fails you could backup your data and do a factory reset (this should also update the BIOS).
Btw there is an old locked thread on this issue: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=60798
The recommended solution is to return the NAS via RMA for a refurb replacement or if only just purchased the unit via the reseller for a new unit.
If you are competent at removing the battery you should be fine but if you damage the unit in the process of attempting to remove and replace the battery it would void the warranty.
