    rysnc can be used to both "push' and "pull" (and you'll need rsync to get the exact copy you want).  Both methods work equally well.   I am backing up to multiple NAS, and it is a bit easier to manage "pull" (it eliminates having muliple backup jobs for the same share on the main NAS).

    It compresses the data flowing on the network connection.  It is not compressing the files.  If the backup is on the local lan, I'd just leave it off.
