I want a 4 bay nas, please read the scenario and comment :-)
I want to buy a 4 disk nas to replace my duo as my main nas.
I can't justify the £400 Ultra but can the £200 NV+
The disk size limitation of the NV+ worries me a little, but I'm not averse to upgrading later to an Ultra.
My concern is that I currently have a duo with 2 x 2TB in a mirror. I have an external 2TB drive which is full. I have a bare 2TB drive which is empty and a bare 2TB with 1TB used
My data is:
Duo (2 x 2TB mirror) has 1 TB of data, 1TB free
My external 2TB is full
My bare drive number 1 (2TB) has 1TB of data, 1TB free
My bare drive number 2 (2TB) is empty so 2TB free
So 4TB data on 10TB of drives but only 1TB of data has protection. Granted the other 3TB data is non critical and if lost would be a shame but nothing that would be a problem.
My plan at the moment is to buy a NV+ and another 2TB drive (Giving me 6 x 2TB in total)
Put 4 x 2TB in the NV+ configured x-raid (raid-5)
Put all my data (4TB) on it
Put the other 2 x 2TB drives in the duo NOT mirrored but jbod or flexraid whatever it is called - to give me 4TB space)
Use the NV+ as data nas
Use duo as backup.
Issues I see are:
I will only have 1TB free disk space
My backup drives are as big as the data I have, so any increase in data will mean that it can't all be backed up.
Ideas:
Manage data better to extend the time before I run out of space on data nas (nv+)
Attach an inexpensive usb external hdd to front of nv+ to backup overflow data once the duo capacity is full.
I'd love to hear any comments you have about this scenario :-)

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSounds like a good idea however I reckon you should save up a few hundred extra pounds and get the Ultra if at all possible.
- rolskiAspirantI'd save & go for the Ultra too.
I've had an NV+ for a couple of years & have had various (minor) problems with it - now I have an Ultra4+ I (almost) can't believe the differences in responsiveness & speed of scans / transfers etc. And there are a couple of other "features" of my overall system / network which seem to have disappeared since I relegated my NV+ to (solely) backup duties.... ;-)
