Initial setup of 102

Bought an RN102 to get my feet wet in NAS's. I haven't looked at a linux type system in ~25 years, and even then it was just crude file management. So far-
Received RN102
Ordered two WD 1TB Reds (should arrive in a few days)
Plugged in RN102
Ran RAIDar on my PC and found the RN102

I'm unable to get to the user interface of the RN102. I tried to shut it down with 2 clicks of the power button, but it just continued to flash slowly. I unplugged/plugged in the unit and it boots up, then goes to the flashing power light. RAIDar shows a steady blue LED for the RN102 with setup and browse grey'd out. It's been like this for ~30min. Does a drive have to be installed to get to the user interface? I figured I'd update the firmware and poke around while I'm waiting for my drives to get here. Is that possible?

You need at least one disk installed. Also note that the NAS will need to wipe the disks (which shouldn't be an issue as you have bought new disks which is what I would recommend).

    Welcome to the forum!
  • The 102 uses a flash to store the install image. Once you insert a disk and boot, the disk is wiped (3 partitions are created : one for the system, one for swap and one for data) then image is extracted to the system partition.
So if you want to poke around, you would need a SATA disk that you can erase (if it's not empty, use factory reset with the disk inserted).
You could also use a VM. http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=143
  • Ah! Thanks for that info. I don't have a spare sata drive at the moment. Let's see what's in the parts bin...
  • I'm getting an "unable to connect" message in Firefox now when I run setup. Raidar LED for device is green. In IE it says unable to display page. PC is Win8.1

    What I did-
    1) Received two new WD Red 1TB drives. I put them in an external enclosure and torture tested them for three days using Bart's Stuff Test on a PC. Both drives are A-Ok. This left them ntfs formatted.

    2) Installed both drives in the 102 and powered it up. Various lights flashed, and after a few minutes it settled down. I then ran Raidar and it recognized the device. There was a message about the drives containing data and requiring formatting. I clicked format. The activity light flickered for a while. Clicking setup at this point gets the unable to connect message. Waited until morning and activity light is no longer flickering. Tried setup again. Same thing.

    3) Performed a reset. (Graceful power off, hold sys switch with paper clip, power on to boot mode, hit backup until 1 is lit, press sys switch.) Lights flashed. Waited a minute and pressed backup to skip time out. Lights flash and settle down. Drive 1 and 2 lit, activity light is flickering. After 20 minutes activity light is still flickering. Clicking setup in Raidar still giving unable to connect message. Same with ReadyCloud.

Tried ReadyCloud on an Android tablet and same thing. It discovers the 102, but won't connect when I click setup.

The firmware is showing as 6.0.8 in Raidar.

Your system should be doing a factory reset on 6.1.8 now.

Yes it is! I put the NAS in tech support mode and you were able to remotely upgrade the firmware. Now I can connect! Thanks a bunch!!
