Insanely slow copying 106GB from Mac Mini to NV+
Long-time ReadyNAS+ users, recently started using a Mac Mini. Trying to copy my iPhoto Library to the NAS to free up 100GB of storage space (I've got a lot of photos.)
When I initiate a copy of the 106.57 GB file, I expected it to take several hours. But OSX is estimating 268(!) hours. Clearly something is wrong. By my math, that's less than 7MB per MINUTE. Clearly, something major is hosed.
I'm connected to the NV+ via AFP. Everything is running at gigabit speeds - switch is Dell 2708. Mac Network Utility reports 0 packets lost.
Mac Mini is running Snow Leopard.
NV+ is running 4.1.7, and four Seagate ST31500341AS (on the HCL - we checked).
How can I make things run at normal speeds?
Thank you.
- Albert
(An aside: My overall impression of the NV+ after several years of use is that it's reliable, but that the software is dreadfully slow, and that it's probably the pickiest piece of hardware I've ever experienced. (Only works with some drives. Only works with some networking gear, etc.) Opening up the web-based management console is slow. Copying files is slow. Everything is SLOW.)

Well update to the beta firmware then and give that a try.anurick wrote:
My ReadyNAS is running the latest released version of the firmware. Lion was in developer hands for months before the release - it's rather inexcusable that NetGear didn't have the compatibility issues worked out the day Lion shipped. (The beta version of the ReadyNAS software has all sorts of dire warnings about data loss, so I'm not comfortable trusting my data to it.)
NetGear is a customer of the 3rd party company NetAFP that develops the Netatalk project which provides AFP and Time Machine for Linux machines e.g. the ReadyNAS. Backporting Netatalk 2.2 to run on Sparc ReadyNAS would've been a lot of work. They didn't just start doing this once Lion was released. NetGear doesn't support beta releases of 3rd party software/hardware. Considering that Apple could still change things before a production release NetGear understandably waited till after the production release of Lion before releasing a public beta for the community to test. Considering the large amount of backporting required, a fair amount of testing is needed. I don't see how NetGear could have done more than they have.
I've used many betas and never had data loss. It's a standard warning they give for every beta. If you're not comfortable to run the beta then wait.anurick wrote:
And I'm not expecting tremendous speed from the NV+. But I am not tolerant of speeds 1/100th of what it used to provide.
If you remain on firmware released months before a new OS and have issues it's understandable that you're experiencing problems. Most Snow Leopard users shouldn't need to be updating to Lion yet.anurick wrote:
For what it's worth, I use drives that are on the HCL. And the fact that later products are "far less picky" demonstrates to me that there is a serious problem with the ReadyNAS NV+, one that has not been fixed.
Firmware updates can address some hardware compatibility up to a point. Sparc ReadyNAS (e.g. NV+) are compatible with a decent range of hardware, just not as big a range as the newer x86 (Intel) ReadyNAS. - anurickAspirantOK, I tried your solution, and loaded the latest beta. I try to access an AFP share, and immediately am greeted by this message:
"Something wrong with the volume's CNID DB, using temporary CNID DB instead. Check server messages for details. Switching to read-only mode."
I logged into FrontView. I don't see any "server messages". Nothing in the log display after "System is Up".
(And mdgm, I appreciate your comments. Rather disheartening that Netgear sets up this forum and doesn't bother to address problems raised in it, but I can't say that I'm surprised.) - anurickAspirantRebooted everything. "Preparing to copy" stays up for hours using SMB or AFP.
Copy using muCommander (shows status) dies after 70GB+ on SMB, locks up after 96GB on AFP (file is Version-1.apversion that it dies copying).
Anyone know how to make this copy work, or has the ReadNAS NV+ eaten my iPhoto library? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe way to get support from NetGear guys is to use tech support (they don't support betas). The NetGear reps on the forum tend to visit the forum in their personal time.
After the update to the beta, the CNID database has to be updated. This can take some time, particularly if you have lots of data.
I would suggest that once a production 4.1.8 is released you update to that and open a tech support case. - anurickAspirantI guess I'd be in better shape had I not taken your earlier advice and updated to the beta. So now I'm stuck until 4.1.8 ships.
Lovely.
I'm done wasting my time with this POS Netgear product.
The fact that Netgear provides a support forum, then doesn't bother to monitor speaks volumes about the organization. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSince you're running the beta, try starting a new thread in the beta forum. NetGear keeps a close eye on that forum.
It's a community forum. The forum should not be seen as a replacement for using NetGear tech support. Some problems can be quickly resolved on the forum. Others can require more work and can be better handled by NetGear tech support.
