Just to clarify - your NAS is your backup. The comments here about Raid not being a substitute for backup are intended for people who are using the NAS for primary storage. You are using it for backup, so it doesn't really apply in your case.
I took a quick look at the Synk product - it appears to me that it does require ReadyNAS remote when you are using it over the internet. (That is because it's support for FTP is limited to read-only).
I'm not a Mac user, so I'm not sure how to auto-connect.
