log into readynas interface remotely WAN and more questions

Hello,

NAS: Ready Nas 314 OS 6.2

first i would like to let everyone know i am very new to using a NAS. so all tips are appreciate, though tips with detailed (baby) steps are always preferred (assume i know absolutely nothing, since i dont).

so far i have it running with (3) 1tb drives for now, plex is working and i have setup readycloud and remote (which kind of seem the same to me, both basically allow me to access shared folders unless i am missing something).

my coworker has a synology at home, he is able to log into it from a browser and access the menu from work. he can download and start a torrent or make changes all from his work computer. right now, i am leaving my computer on, then i do a logmein to my home computer, then use that browser to access my nas when "playing" with things from work.

my questions:

1) am i able to remotely access the interface? if so, how?

2) what apps do you recommend so i can log in, find a torrent and set it to download (from a different location or from my android)

3) what do you do with your NAS, what am i missing that would make my life easier or that is a cool feature people might not realize is there, tips and tricks kinda stuff?

thanks,

Carlos

To access the web-GUI of your NAS remotely, you may open port 443 on your existing router at home and point it to the LAN IP Address of your NAS. Take note of your WAN IP Address.

So whenever you want to access the web-GUI of your NAS remotely from outside your network, just enter https://WAN_IP_Address/admin on the address of your browser then it should ask you for the login credentials.

You may use the Transmission App. Check it here: http://apps.readynas.com/pages/?page_id=9

BTW, you can also use a different port. There is a "port 2" field you enter on the NAS HTTPS settings, and then forward that port value. Anything over 50000 is a good choice. Then use https://WAN_IP_Address:xxxxx/admin as the url (xxxxx being the port number you pick).

Some routers won't let you forward 443, since they reserve it for their own remote administration. And some ISPs block it.
  • where do i find the nas https settings?

thank you both for the great tips!

What is the model of the NAS you have purchased?

If ever you have a ReadyNAS OS 6 model, once you have logged-in to the web-GUI of your NAS, go to System>Settings>Services then click HTTPS :D

If ever you have a ReadyNAS OS 4 model, once you have logged-in to Frontview, go to Services>Standard File Protocols then look for HTTPS :D
  • thank you! yes i have OS 6.2 installed.

since you guys are helpful. here's a slightly tougher question. i currently subscribe to Private Internet Access (PIA). it comes with windows software where i can enable the vpn so all my traffic goes through it. and it also comes with proxy settings with a username/password that i can put directly into utorrent. so my computer in general will wont be on the VPN but the torrent traffic is at least going through the proxy.

with couch potato, transmission, or OS6.2 can i set it up so only torrent traffic uses my VPN/proxy settings? i dont really want all traffic to go through the VPN, since it will take a hit on speed (since i also use PLEX and want the full potential of my 100/20mb connection).
