Just clarifying at step 4-5 you are ending up with a raid 0 volume spanning 2 disks and you are definitely using flexraid?
What are you aiming to achieve in terms of the volume or volumes you want? Raid 0 spanning more than one disk is even more pointless than individual disk volumes, which are ok as long as you have a robust backup arrangement.
Have you checked the disks using vendor tools?
What disks are they?
What firmware?
