Memory Test: detailed explanation available?
Could you please point me to a detailed explanation of the LCD information on my Ultra 4 Plus?
The LCD says PSS ERR Time.
What does PSS mean?
Will the Ultra 4 Plus memory test run once or twice and then stop?
How long should it take with 4 gigs of ram?
How do I know if the memory is good?
The last time I ran this on another similar ReadyNAS the errors popped up on the LCD and then disappeared; and it ran for 19 hours. The memory there WAS bad, but am I required to sit there and watch the LCD for errors? The errors, if any, are or are not logged?
Why does the backup button blink once, then the backup button blinks and then each drive number blinks sequentially, before the sequence starts over again? What is it telling me? It probably feels very lonely.
I have looked everywhere I can think for an explanation....

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPSS would be PASS i.e. the number of times the test is run in a loop
The memory test will run more and more passes till stopped.
The sequence you're seeing I think means the test is running fine. If you get a different sequence then there is a problem.
To know if the memory is good you need it to pass the memory test then you need to use the NAS and find things work fine and that data isn't corrupted. Problems likely due to bad memory can be flagged in diagnostics.log from the logs zip file (Status > Logs > Download all logs).
Do note that NetGear doesn't support 3rd party memory upgrades and they will be unable to help recover your data if your use of 3rd party memory leads to data corruption. - NickHark1AspirantIts been running for 10.5 hours, and the lCD says its on the 3rd pass.
Is this checking a different part of the memory or is it merely running through the same test 3 times?
Err= 0
Does this mean that it encountered zero errors? The reason I ask this is because when I ran this test on the "bad memory" Ultra 4 plus, it ran for 19 hours and it was only by chance that I was looking at the LCD and noted four or five errors that it threw off, but it would return to zero=err thereafter.
Why the "Hide-the-ball?" - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThat's 3 separate runs of the test.
I don't know why the error count would reset. - NickHark1AspirantIts still running and this is what the LCD says:
PSS 6 Err 0 Time 20:54:20
Will it end?
Do I just pull the plug to get it to stop?
Is this a common Linux process that is widely known by Linux guys?
Where can I get information about this test?
Thanks for the guidance.
Nick - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou would need to power down the NAS to turn it off. If pressing the power button twice doesn't turn it off then pulling the power would be an option to turn it off.
I'm not sure what the memory test used is from memory. I think it'd probably be mentioned in the GPL: http://www.readynas.com/gpl
