Missing share folder since new Win7 PC: Case#19619258 SOLVED
ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.10 [1.00a043]
Hi all
Firstly my apologies up front if this is solved in other threads, I promise I have spent a couple of hours looking already but to my untrained eye, no issue seemed to quite match so here I am.
My Duo had been perfect for a few years until recently my Win7 PC died (hard disk death). Had a new hard drive fitted, Win7 reinstalled and now can't find my Duo share folder with approx 80GB of music/photos on it. The router and Duo haven't changed at all so what is missing in my set-up? I have reinstalled RAID on the PC and already tried upgrading the firmware up to the latest version (4.1.10) but this hasn't helped.
What can I do? And the more 'layman' you can make any suggestions/instructions, the better - I'm not dumb but I'm no network guru and because my Duo has been so reliable since initial set-up, any knowledge I acquired at the time is pretty rusty.
Thanks (in hope and desperation)
Olly

- vandermerweMasterI have vista, so not sure if I'll be able to help.
Can you access your network centre on the windows machine-can you see the NAS as a network device? - ollymcAspirantHi vandermerwe - yes the NAS shows under Network with the std 'backup' and 'media' folders (which I don't use) but not my own folder with all the data. I can also access this network location via RAID though it used to be that doing that would initiate the user login dialog and my folder would then also show. Using RAID now just takes me to the Network location: no user login and no folder
- vandermerweMasterWhen you reinstalled windows, did you setup exactly the same windows users and passwords?
- ollymcAspirantNo we didn't - still using the default user, no password. Worth a go obviously (or you wouldn't mention it)..? I'll try it now..
- ollymcAspirantOk - changed windows user and password back exactly, and rebooted PC+router+NAS but no joy..
- ollymcAspirantAdditional information for anyone that can help: in ReadyNAS Frontview > Volumes > Volume C I see my 1TB drive as an available disk but it shows 0MB free and the disk space shows 0 MB of 0 MB used. Not a good sign I know but not sure whether this is a symptom of something else or the cause of the issue. Question is, how can I fix it?
- vandermerweMasterDo you have 2 disks in your Duo?
Do you have a backup of the share?
What access rights have you given to the missing share?
You could try changing the access to give access to everyone and guest, and/or resetting permissions via Frontview.
Then try again, this may expose a permissions problem. - ollymcAspirantThanks vandermerwe, best efforts to reply below:
Do you have 2 disks in your Duo?
No just the one.
Do you have a backup of the share?
I have a backup as of 3 months ago, and it would be a little time-consuming to get the last three months of stuff but most of it possible (back to Amazon Music Mgr/7 download mgr/ etc). So its not a horrible nightmare - just a time-consuming inconvenience and also raises the queries of reliability (although I understand that there is no substitute for backing up and no such thing as 100%, and in any case at this stage, user error/ignorance is still very much on the cards).
What access rights have you given to the missing share?
As I say it was a while ago since I set it all up, but I'm pretty sure there was a password linked to the folder. However the p/w may have just been linked to the NAS user, I can't be sure.

So this would be through ReadyNAS Frontview > Security > User & Group accounts? I have one user here who I don't think is restricted.
Or would it be through ReadyNAS Frontview > Shares > Share Listing? The trouble here is that I don't see my share folder so can't change any settings. I could try re-adding the same share name but then I worry that I might somehow be over-writing the 'hidden' one with all my data on it. What do you think? - ollymcAspirantSorry Experts - can anyone confirm the detail of how I should follow vandermerwe's advice? Pasted again below to clarify which bit I am unsure of.. particularly my concern about overwriting the share folder and making the issue permanent, rather than solving it.

Olly - vandermerweMasterIt would be through the share configuration.
Are you saying that there are no shares listed?
I thought you were having problems accessing your data through windows, I did not realise the share had disappeared from Frontview.
I am running out of ideas before suggesting you contact support, you did not have a redundant volume and your backup is poor; I don't need to tell you what this means. When you sort this out, please get another disk and make your volume redundant, and get in the habit of maintaining an up to date backup.
Have you tried reinstalling the firmware?
Contact support and post your case number in the title of the thread, one of the super experts may have some advice.
