More shares exists than created during NAS setup

Dear Community,

I had to re-install my ReadyNASRND2000 because both hard disks (3,5'' - 1 TB) has noticed more and more errors in the last month. The shop person where I bought the NAS (Media Markt / Graz Austria) told me that they have sold that NAS in 2010 with the wrong hard disks from beginning on. Netagear used Segate plates with 7600 speed instead of using sepecial NAS  dedicated hard disks for 24/7 hours operation and with 3 years instead of 2 years warranty!!! After installing two new plates I also had to set up the system complete new and install al the data again as the control file system was damaged (error message when contacting the unit via Radiator). After that I see now more shares on the plates as I have created during the setup? I have created 4 shares but I can see 3 more:

  • \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\admin (empty folder) ?
  • \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\c (contains copies of the 4 created folders + the "home" folder which again contains the "admin" folder and is empty as well) ?
  • \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\home (contains another folder called "admin" but is emtpy as well) ?

Question now:

  • Do I need all that additional shares / folders and what for they exists ?
  • Why has them be created ?
  • Can remove that folders ?

    • \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\c is the data volume, and if you delete it you lose all all your data.
    • \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\home is a "private home share" feature.
      • \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\admin  another path to \\NAS-D0-0A-CA\home\admin

    Don't delete home (or \admin).  If you don't want the private home share feature, then you can disable it with frontview.

    Select security->user & group accounts

    Then select "preferences" in the pulldown on the upper right.

    You'll see the "Private home shares for users" option - it should be second on the list.

    The feature is described on page 31 here: http://www.readynas.com/download/documentation/UM/RAIDiator4-1_SW_en_30Nov11.pdf
